This just can't be...

As I am stumbling in the forum so many questions/issues/problems with the concept....

As far as I can tell from your information here, Bank Roll hunting consists of little more than:

Walking into a bank and asking for coins.

Taking the “good” ones and maybe selling them.

Getting rid of the “bad” ones.

Now, no one I have spoken to has ever said that they would have the nerve to even try this concept. And of course the “good” ones, they can't be worth more the face value of the coin anyway.

Now the concept seems to be con, likely put out by the coin processing people to drum up business, but furthered by those claiming coins have other “value”. If this “value” was the case and anyone could walk into banks and ask for them, everyone would be doing it, and since clearly everyone isn't doing it, and just as clearly no one is doing it, it can't be done. Would like to know from those that claim this exists or that they do it, what you would say to one who presents with a factual basis a: This just can't be, argument.

Aye yai YAI! Have you EVER heard of rare coins? Spot metal value?

I will admit this is a hobby of diminishing returns - but the thousands of posts here are testament to the fact that coin roll hunting HAS been profitable to many! (and how many hobbies are profitable AT ALL?)

I agree with the others - not interested? Don't do it!

I don't understand the confusion here.

It IS as simple as you stated. Walk into a bank and ask for coins. You either get all clad (not silver) coins or you get some silver coins as well.

If you get silver coins then save them and deposit the non silver into your account. If you get all clad then deposit them all into your account and try again at another bank.

What is the debate here?

Now have read abit, and learned somemore elsewhere. Percentage of coins being "good" some value other than face(you use silver here), is an issue of location(area), time(when), access(already picked over by bank staff/already gone). People post percentages let's use 1% as a base. Out of 10000 coins 100 will be good, 9900 you spend or return to the bank. Time spent getting them, sorting them, returning them, what must the value of these coins be to even be remotely worth while? Some costs must be involved too of course. And to have any hope of understanding the numbers at issue I'll stick with my 1% as a base, so understanding this some figures will be needed. I'll begin with these silver(pennies is it?) figuring out the value of 100 and so on to advance the argument.

It's not a scam, many times, the cost of time and gas outweighs the reward. We mainly do it as coin collecting or for the fun of it, a lot like playing the lotto, some times you can hit is big, but most times you get nothing. Unlike the lotto, the odds are much better. I average about 1 silver dime per $150 searched, 1 silver quarter per $2000 searched, 1 war silver war nickel for every $80 searched, and halves vary too wildly to give a reasonable average. This used to be a secret, but the idea has propagated across the internet quickly and if you want to try it out, you better get in quick, all it cost is time and patience

Ahh just a few posts down some numbers to use, not the 1% as a base I just advanced, but proof 1% as a base isn't far off. Now as I get started on the argument.

That is what I meant by secret, most people think that silver coins are completely gone from circulation. Everyone knows competition has ramped up. I only mentioned silver coins because that is what the author didn't believe. I do it solely for the coin collecting, for the first few years, I only did pennies.

And we come to "believe", I plan on asking 100, as in the "Family Feud" show, and have asked 37 people in the last day if they have or would be able to walk into a bank and ask for 5000$ in change. So far 0 for 37. One co-worker asked her husband and he was apparently so upset about why anyone would ask this kind of question that they got into an argument.

Unfortunately many well-meaning regular posters here fall for the occasional troll posts whenever they pop up.

well $200 in halfs (that I had my bank order in for me) and $100 in quarters that they had on hand --yeilded me -- 5 --1965 to 1970 era 40% silver halfs worth $5 in silver each --a 1957 d 90% quarter worth a bit over $5 as well ==$30 in silver value for $2.75 face value that my local coin store will give about $15 to $18 bucks for currently === yeilding $12.25 to 15.25 in profiet == like getting a instant 4 to 5 % on your money -- with no chance of loss of "original" capital --since the coinage will always be worth the face value you paid for it there is no possivle way to lose doing this --I get $100 a week and use the coins to pay the food bill when I go shopping each week. cuz hey money is money --it all spends the same -- I veiw it as sort of like getting free lotto tickets where you might or might not win ( sometimes you find silver . sometimes not) , but can't lose.

I don't know why you would go through that trouble, banks deal with large change orders all the time, from small businesses to charity drives. Banks have thousands of dollars of coins on hand and are usually willing to dispense with it. $5000 would be pushing the limits to what a normal bank would hold.

Re: This just can't be...

a walk up order of 5000 bucks in change is pushing it a bit too much --but if you speak to the bank they can "arrange" for a special order to be delivered with their next coin order (provided to do not "dump" them back upon them oncce you have "cherry picked" em)-- I get them to tack on $100 bucks worth of halves each time they order coinage for me -- they gladly do it. asnd I do dump deposit at another bank
