This just can't be...

As I am stumbling in the forum so many questions/issues/problems with the concept....

As far as I can tell from your information here, Bank Roll hunting consists of little more than:

Walking into a bank and asking for coins.

Taking the “good” ones and maybe selling them.

Getting rid of the “bad” ones.

Now, no one I have spoken to has ever said that they would have the nerve to even try this concept. And of course the “good” ones, they can't be worth more the face value of the coin anyway.

Now the concept seems to be con, likely put out by the coin processing people to drum up business, but furthered by those claiming coins have other “value”. If this “value” was the case and anyone could walk into banks and ask for them, everyone would be doing it, and since clearly everyone isn't doing it, and just as clearly no one is doing it, it can't be done. Would like to know from those that claim this exists or that they do it, what you would say to one who presents with a factual basis a: This just can't be, argument.

I'd say, ok. Don't do it, better for us. Thanks, have a good day.

Re: This just can't be...

This is not some get rich quick scheme that you hear about on late night television. This is a hobby that many people across many parts of the country for many generations have enjoyed, not just for finding a coin with metal properties that is worth more than the face value (such as silver) but more so for the numismatic value of the coin to collectors. If you feel scammed or wronged in some way, then by all means make this your first and last post in this community. These people are all very nice people here, some of which have paid many times the face value of a coin to a person in a bank who was planning on cashing it it for far less than the value of the coin. This hobby in no way scams the banks involved or the companies that move the coins. If anything it stimulates their businesses. Perhaps next time you could do more research before judging us.

This is a heck of a hobby though, so if you have time, try it. Collect pennies and nickels to start, they are cheap and there are so many different types to collect. They aren't always worth much on the turnaround for making money, but a hobby is supposed to be fun not an income. And for the most part, collecting coins this way is the cheapest way to do it and you really can't lose money. The ones you save will never lose the value you put into them. You could get shorted rolls or foreign coins (but those are cool too) but most of the time it evens out, especially after you get a hand full of dimes in a box of pennies.

Re: This just can't be...

Wow, strange coincidence for sure.

We have a post discussing whether or not to list skunk boxes and lack of finds, where the discussion is if by not listing our lack of finds will cause new members and lurkers to think CRHing is a type of panacea in the highest degree.

Then we get a brand new poster who on his/her first post wants to know if this CRHing is really such a panacea.

Hmmmm.

Re: This just can't be...

I don't understand the confusion here.

It IS as simple as you stated. Walk into a bank and ask for coins. You either get all clad (not silver) coins or you get some silver coins as well.

If you get silver coins then save them and deposit the non silver into your account. If you get all clad then deposit them all into your account and try again at another bank.

What is the debate here?

It's not a scam, many times, the cost of time and gas outweighs the reward. We mainly do it as coin collecting or for the fun of it, a lot like playing the lotto, some times you can hit is big, but most times you get nothing. Unlike the lotto, the odds are much better. I average about 1 silver dime per $150 searched, 1 silver quarter per $2000 searched, 1 war silver war nickel for every $80 searched, and halves vary too wildly to give a reasonable average. This used to be a secret, but the idea has propagated across the internet quickly and if you want to try it out, you better get in quick, all it cost is time and patience

It was never a secret, many of us have been doing it for years, no one knew there was a community for it until recently. Any time you start collecting coins, the first thought is to go buy coins from a bank to increase your chances of finding coins you need for your collection. I think it became big recently because silver is so high now, and that is what a lot of people only care about. You yourself only mentioned silver coins. There are other people on here that enjoy this hobby not just to find the silver coins.

That is what I meant by secret, most people think that silver coins are completely gone from circulation. Everyone knows competition has ramped up. I only mentioned silver coins because that is what the author didn't believe. I do it solely for the coin collecting, for the first few years, I only did pennies.

Re: This just can't be...

For instance, today, I decided not to roll hunt, and bought 3 mercury dimes and 2 silver quarters, for less than 20 bucks. I feel that I came out ahead, even tho there was no hunting thrill. ffd

Re: This just can't be...

Wow! I guess since 1966 I've been dreaming about CRH.

Re: This just can't be...

It is no scam - I just found 2 war nickels last night (worth almost exactly $4 at current silver prices) and a 1939-D nickel which I could probably sell for about $5 if I were so inclined. I've gotten other war nickels, Buffalo nickels and even a Liberty Head nickel, plus hundreds of wheat cents, several 90% silver dimes, many dozens of 90% silver halves and about 300 40% silver halves.

So why doesn't everyone do it? First, NOT everyone knows about it - you'd be surprised how many people don't even have a concept that some of our coins contained silver a few decades ago. Then you have those that know it, but believe that all the silver is gone (or all of the Buffalo nickels), simply because their worth is so obvious. Finally, you have those that know it, who also know that some coins are out there, but who either don't have the money and/or the time to go to a variety of banks to get the coins, then sort through the coins and finally dump the common coins back at yet another bank (or several) to complete the process.

Ditto for mint errors, which occur regardless of the denomination or metal content of the coins.

Like anything else, this hobby takes work (and a bit of luck) to be successful. Do enough work, you'll find silver and/or desireable non-silver. Don't do the work, and you'll remain an unrewarded skeptic - your choice.

Re: This just can't be...

Just give it a try and see for your self. Good luck and HH.
