Had this posted on todays finds..
Seems that it might not be a pipe tamper,
So im taking Iron Patch,s advice and posting it on here. At first toght it was something off of furniture, then maybe something else, but it shows no signs of being attached to anything..Its 2inch long
By inch wide..I believe its made out of pewter. From the flaking on it..It also has no seems..
Any help would be great..
George

One feature every pipe tamper I have seen or used shares is a flat base. Makes for an even burn and you can scrape the bowl sides.

But that is the right size and the base is . . . relatively flat. But I think it is something else. The section of cylinder/shaft has some purpose. It may have been a trivit of something with three or four cherubs like yours at the corners.

Round stock above acorn shape and below cherubs legs may have passed through metal,marble ect. not really visible except for bottom a bit above wear marks.
Cherub tutti or whatever character is then leaning or reclining towards clock,or lamp ,candle holder or whatever. A cherub each corner and as Charlie mentioned base (tamped area) would be a foot for support.

The stem would run through base and I'd also go with the ball with the flattened base would be the foot for support.

As stated in your other post I know its not a Pipe Tamper.

My further thoughts are;
Its probably 1880-1920
Made of Spelter
Might have been silver or gold plated

It reminds me of something that might have went into something kind of like a stopper of some kind.But I don't know?Bump

It might have been a figure you would but in a flower pot? The base looks like it would be used to weight to the figure so it would not knock over in a flower pot. I'm guess you would bury the base in the flower pot and it would like like you have a cherub sitting in your flower pot. Just a very wild guess.

It is a 'putti'. That's a useful search term here.
