I have this 1940 wheat cent where the majority of "in god" is missing and the lettering in "liberty" and "1940" look off. Your thoughts?

Damage. You can see where part of the lettering has been pushed upward.

Rolling machine.
 
Yup, probably happened early in it's life, then natural toning disguised the fresh damage.
