Well I returned to the field that gave up all the buttons yesterday. This time I brought Jersey Ben along with his brand new e-trac. We hit a few buttons in the field between the chalk marks when I got a strong penny signal at only one inch. Expecting to find my first Memorial Cent of the day, I was surprised to see a large copper right near the surface! I'm pretty sure it is a King George II.

After about 30 minutes, the girl's soccer team showed up so we hit an adjacent field. Almost immediately I hit another penny/dime reading at around 7 inches. I called Ben over to see how it sounded like on his detector and was surprised that his e-trac could not pick it up with Auto Sensitivity on.
Out of the plug dug a nice Barber Dime. All of my previous dug Barbers are very worn, black or pitted or a combination of all three!

A few minutes later I got my second large copper, which turned out to be an undated Matron head.

Unfortunately the coppers are not in great shape, but finding a pretty Barber was a treat!

very nice Barber !!

I can't believe that place hasn't been pounded. Soccer/baseball fields and parks are the first to get wiped clean. Congrats on the finds and the promising new spot :headbang:

Glad to see you found some goodies out there. That barber must have been in the ground as long as the Titanic has been at the bottom of the atlantic.

WOW, that Dime is Great!! :icon_thumright:

That Barber looks good.

Man that ground is hard on Coppers and buttons.

Congrats

that place looks to be a promising honey hole

Awesome finds!!!

nice...hope I can match that in the morning :blob7:

Nice going on finding the coins in the first place, despite the condition of the coppers(boy I hate to see that) at least your found them and getting that modern barber is icing for you, at least it is a very very nice dime.

It seems soccer fields are sometimes located on areas that were once farmland and if a lot of fill was not brought in, always a chance of finding some goodies, and sometimes the fill that is brought in can reap rewards depending where the fill came from. :icon_thumright:

(Neil, maybe your first NJ copper is there but sure hope it is in better shape than the two from today)

Don

I think the three pictures below answer a lot of questions including the fill question (I don't think so, based on the bordering properties and the historic photos), and why the site has not been "pounded"...at least not yet. It is just too new!

As far as the NJ Copper goes, before the KG II was cleaned I was convinced I had my first!

Neil, allow me to chime in. I had a blast at the fields on Saturday. I was amazed when you pulled that KG with ease at only an inch or 2 from the soccer field. I learned the hard way that "Auto" sensitivity with the Etrac hurts depth when I could not see that Barber Dime at only 7-8". Anyway, that field was murder on targets but here are my 2 buttons for the day: Too bad the large one hardly has any detail remaining. It must have been a nice button at some point.

That aerial looks like the fields in and adjacent to Fairmount Park..Are you permitted to hunt there ???

definitely a good idea to use manual sensitivity and put it as high as possible.

Nice finds all. Neil, good to see you're still ripping it up!

Big Poppa, the entire Fairmount Park system (which incorporates nearly all open space along the Schuylkill, Wissahhickon, Pennypack) is off limits to metal detecting. There are 63 parks that fall under the Fairmount Park System. Basically you need to leave the city of Philadelphia :) Here is a link with the list: http://www.fairmountpark.org/ParkList.asp

That being said, an unspoken rule of metal detecting is that we never divulge our sites, or the sites of others that we may, or think we may recognize. Being new to the forum, I am sure we will all let this one slide.

Welcome to the forum!

Thanks for the welcome and the info..As far as divulging locations, well I learned that technique from the best..I think you may know him :)

Congrats on the Barber and relics...

fantastic spot you have there - pound it hard.

Neil, fantastic looking Barber!!!

Great crop job on the aerials. You can hardly tell that it's Fairmount Park
