Tiny skull found years ago.
I have an item that my son in law found while looking for arrowheads on a farm in Fleming county, Kentucky years ago. He has asked around and shown it to numerous people with no help as to how old it may be or even what it is, or was used for. I was browsing the internet and found this site to be very interesting and informative, so I thought I would give it a try.

This first attachment shows the small skull item head-on. (Material is very light. Can't even tell that you are holding it.)

This last 2 photos shows the backside and as you can see, the mouth hole does not go all the way through the piece. There is some sort of two-level notch on this backside. Any info would be appreciated.

More than likely, it is just a very cool natural stone.

That's way cool:icon_thumleft: looks to be bone to me JMO maybe some type of fetish piece:dontknow:A real cool find, never seen anything like that.

Probably natural, and if it is, one of the coolest I've seen here.
Great find either way...

I have no idea but would of picked it up also. Sounds like it is a clay item by the way you are describing it.

Yeah, it does need a frame. As far as getting it looked at, it has been around, even sent to the University of Tennessee Archaelogical department for review. No one has seen anything like it. (And it definitley is not a natural stone.) Starting to sound like it will remain a mystery.

Looks like it definitely could be something. I always look at it as, just because someone has never seen anything like it doesn't mean it's not infant a relic. Did you or your son ever find anything else there or go back to the location?

Wow. I do not think it looks natural at all; rather, it closely resembles effigy heads found in the Delaware and Susquehanna watersheds in PA (where I am from) and surrounding states. If it is clay, it may have broken off a pipe or pot. Could be steatite, too (?). Fantastic.

Kindest regards,

Monty

The notching in the back kind of looks like a broken biconically drilled hole.

Cool piece!

So are you thinking it blew out on that side while being drilled and the hole was not finished?

That is a neat piece.
It sort of reminds me of really weathered kaolin clay.
This is a pretty weathered clay marble that is very light now.
It was found in water so its much cleaner than it would be if it was in a field.

Either that or pummice.
Figuring out the material may lead you to an answer.

Tilly Bone Boom?

Has anyone ever told you how to preserve it so it doesnt break down? The type of material looks like it would break very easy. You need to find a way to preserve it.
