To Kill an American

You probably missed this in the rush of news, but there was actually a report that someone in Pakistan had published in a newspaper, an offer of a reward to anyone who killed an American, any American.

So an Australian dentist wrote an editorial the following day to let everyone know what an American is, so they would know when they found one. (Good one, mate!!!!)

"An American is English, or French, or Italian, Irish, German, Spanish, Polish, Russian or Greek. An American may also be Canadian, Mexican, African, Indian, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Australian, Iranian, Asian, or Arab, or Pakistani or Afghan.

An American may also be a Comanche, Cherokee, Osage, Blackfoot, Navaho, Apache, Seminole or one of the many other tribes known as native Americans.

An American is Christian, or he could be Jewish, or Buddhist, or Muslim. In fact, there are more Muslims in America than in Afghanistan . The only difference is that in America they are free to worship as each of them chooses.

An American is also free to believe in no religion. For that he will answer only to God, not to the government, or to armed thugs claiming to speak for the government and for God.

An American lives in the most prosperous land in the history of the world.

The root of that prosperity can be found in the Declaration of Independence , which recognizes the God given right of each person to the pursuit of happiness.

An American is generous. Americans have helped out just about every other nation in the world in their time of need, never asking a thing in return.

When Afghanistan was over-run by the Soviet army 20 years ago, Americans came with arms and supplies to enable the people to win back their country!

As of the morning of September 11, Americans had given more than any other nation to the poor in Afghanistan . Americans welcome the best of everything...the best products, the best books, the best music, the best food, the best services. But they also welcome the least.

The national symbol of America , The Statue of Liberty , welcomes your tired and your poor, the wretched refuse of your teeming shores, the homeless, tempest tossed. These in fact are the people who built America .

Some of them were working in the Twin Towers the morning of September 11, 2001 earning a better life for their families. It's been told that the World Trade Center victims were from at least 30 different countries, cultures, and first languages, including those that aided and abetted the terrorists.

So you can try to kill an American if you must. Hitler did. So did General Tojo, and Stalin, and Mao Tse-Tung, and other blood-thirsty tyrants in the world. But, in doing so you would just be killing yourself. Because Americans are not a particular people from a particular place. They are the embodiment o f the human spirit of freedom. Everyone who holds to that spirit, everywhere, is an American.

Please keep this going !
Pass this around the World.

Allah be praised ::)

Maybe I'll edit it a little, so that it is actually correct...

An American lives in the most prosperous land in the history of the world.  ...at least until we can't afford gasoline, food, or goods.  Well...the Roman Empire was pretty prosperous too...

The root of that prosperity can be found in the Declaration of Independence , which recognizes the God "Creator"-given right of each person to the pursuit of happiness.  The Declaration is not a legal document.  The Bill of Rights IS.  And the Constitution doesn't mention the pursuit of happiness as a Right.  Read it!

An American is generous. Americans have helped out just about every other nation in the world in their time of need, never asking a thing in return. Except pushing our own agendas!  (See the example that conveniently follows:)

When Afghanistan was over-run by the Soviet army 20 years ago, Americans came with arms and supplies to enable the people to win back their country!  (But really this was just to stop the Commies from spreading their influence.  Don't mistake this gesture for genuine goodwill!)

(But we don't welcome them anymore.  That's why we have a Fence now.)

Until you look to more recent history and notice America's predilection towards Killing some of their people preemptively. But, in doing so you would just be killing yourself. Because Americans are not a particular people from a particular place. They are the embodiment of the human spirit of freedom. Everyone who holds to that spirit, everywhere, is an American. These last lines are the sappiest bunch of CRAP I've ever heard!  When you kill someone--Anyone!--anywhere, you're killing yourself.  Not just an American.  People are the embodiment of humanity--and all that humanity means.  It's hopes and dreams, triumphs and failures.  I like this country too, but don't put us up on such a foolish pedestal.  We're all people here, and we all have to stick together.

Buckleboy, did you ever think of loaning out your massive ego to the people who are trying to patch the breaks in the levees in Missouri? I bet your pomposity could do wonders in those holes. :P I mean, you know EVERYTHING and don't mind telling everybody that you do.

I love you too, Sweetie. :-* Just trying to wring a little propaganda out of the e-mail, and put a little fact in.

No fancy speech from me. And American is one who hears the National anthem, and their heart swells with pride, and a lone tear might slip down their cheek. It is a feeling BORN into each of us who call this Great Nation home. Name me a country without hate, flaws, I might be willing to move there. But the move wouldn't work because my heart WILL ALWAYS be AMERICAN. Countless. men, and ,women have given their lives so that each of us can "say American Sucks" if we feel so inclined. (I don't). If something is going on in our Country that you don't like then do something about it. Whiners are for the brain dead that call this country home. Go figure.

Had to give a little more thought to the list of nationalities and religions that make up being an American. WOW! That makes me wonder how the few that are convinced that only an employed, taxpaying, caucasion that votes and argues the Conservative vs Liberal division makes up a true American. Experienced Reality this morning, thanks for the original post, Pepper. OOops, male Pegleglooker.

It'd be funny, if it weren't True. I don't appreciate propaganda posted here, blurr. It's not what I log in to see--although I have no trouble making it factual (Facts, NOT BELIEFS).

Do you start Whining whenever someone challenges you to Think, or actually find out if something is true or false? So what is it that you find inaccurate in the post I made above? Get it out on the table buddy, and we'll talk about it. Or you could just keep your snide comments about my profession flowing as you always do. It's what I expect from you, Old Buddy. A lot of shock and awe in your attacks on me, and absolutely no common sense or intelligence whatsoever.

Jeff called it like he saw it, and I certainly agree.

Perhaps we should have a Propaganda thread. Whaddya think, Jeff?

If you don't appreciate this so called "propaganda", don't read it. That's the beautiful thing about America, anyone has the right to write whatever they like. You also have all the right in the world not to read it. I have received that e-mail numerous times since the attacks on our country on September eleventh 2001. As smart as you are, you missed the point. It's the idea of the post that gives people in this country a sense of unity. Maybe even a slight sense of pride in their country. You although are too smart to be taken in by the "man", aren't you now. ;D Maybe we SHOULD have a propaganda thread, then all who are associated with college academia can post THEIR propaganda there.

And I also have the right to correct the falsehoods and re-post.  So I'm exercising my rights as well.  The original post was a quote from an e-mail, so I did nothing to mess with the words of the original poster, or change them.  There wasn't much original content in the first place...

Point is, I can get my sense of unity without all the Sap, Romance, Courtship, and Distortion of the facts.  Every Fourth of July I go to see the fireworks, eat food with friends, and enjoy that sense of unity and community. It's part of what I like about the Fourth.  Contrary to what you might believe, I get the idea of the post.  The idea of unity is wonderful--but it is not a specifically American quality.  You see, it's the WAY that the idea is clothed in the e-mail that I take offense to.  Making us seem like *such* a caring country (when I've just seen rants on here in the last six months about us spending money to aid other countries in need  >:( ).  I say tell it like it is.  There is no room for a Rose-Colored view of the America of yesteryear--back when this country actually Practiced what it Preached.  Currier and Ives are dead, and so is Norman Rockwell.  And besides, if somebody needs an e-mail to give them that patriotic feeling this time of year, they're not much of an American anyhow.

Excellent Response :coffee2:

I guess my point is that there are MANY people who get tired of those who want to always point out the flaws in our country. Are we collectively perfect as a nation? Of course not! It never fails though when someone wants to say something nice about the American populace, out comes the "blame America first" crowd. I get it, we have killed thousands of people (the great majority of these deservedly so). We have "evil" corporations that rape foreign lands of their resources. You see BB, I went to college also, and was made to watch "the ugly American". Maybe just once, just once, you wouldn't have to be quite so negative when it comes to praising the GOOD things that this country has done. You don't have to insert a negative next to every positive that is listed. And I'm not wearing my red, white and blue suspenders today :D I could care less that you are a professor. YOU are the one that brings that fact to the forefront, time and time again. I have made good friends with people in the teaching community, though my friends don't share your views. You are welcome to your ideas about this country, just remember that you are one of about 300 million. There are a great many of us that feel differently than you. Maybe we could all just think about the GOOD our country has brought to the world for a change instead of all of the code pinko crap that is spewed all the time. I won't comment further. Have a great Fourth of July everyone!!!

I've always thought of the US of A as epitomizing Independence -of thought, action , deed - and helping teach that principle to the rest of the World.

I think you all have done very well. So far, so good.

I wish everyone a Happy Independence Day :occasion18:

good one.

Seems to me that stopping a communist takeover IS a gesture of goodwill.

IF we were to hop on over to Darfur, for example, and put a stop to what is going on over there (Or Tibet or any one of a dozen such places in the world where the populace is being slaughtered on a day to day basis) THAT is not goodwill?

Depends on your point of view, I guess. In war, people will get killed. But the people are now being killed by oppressive regimes who desire continued control of everything in said country.

America, on the other hand, will kick ass and take names and then let the people take care of themselves AFTER we rebuild the country for them, of course.

How many countries out there can say they were taken over by America, ruled by America?

Hey, propaganda goes both ways. I prefer my views and the views of this letter. However, I realize propaganda when I see it.

;D ;D ;D Yes even arming Bin Laden and the Taliban (in their fight against the Soviets) can be viewed as a "gesture of goodwill" LOL ;D ;D ;D depends on your point of view. :D :D ....and yours is always the same Jeffro. Why do you refuse to see the other side of any issue? BTW How have you been my friend? :) 8)

Yes, the Soviets needed to be stopped but calling it a "gesture of goodwill" ??? ??? lol

Why dont we just call this letter (and the fictional changes made to it) "good propaganda." I like it. :D
