Nice buckles MM, no help on the dates! Are you close to King's mountain NC? A work colleague from NC was telling me of a Revolutionary War battle there, 1780s. Maybe a tip or old news for you. HH, Mike

First 2 are not very old, but the iron one might be. If the iron one was found over here it would be called a 'spectacle' buckle & date from 16-17th century. However they were always copper-alloy, so this is a puzzeller. I think it must be quite old.

I agree. The second one, with the cylindrical brass piece on it, is not old--that was a relatively new addition to buckles. But the first thing I thought when I saw the iron one was that it was early 1800's or late 1700's. I'm sure someone will reply with more information, but I think that's one to put in the electrolysis tank. Well done!

Oh, and thanks for the dedicatory thread ;D

Thanks,

Thanks BB. I will be setting up my electrolysis lab soon. I hope it turns out to be an old buckle instead of a pretzel. ;D

Thanks Glenn. Late 1800's would make sense. That seems to be the era of the relics I am digging up at this place.

Re: Today you can call me "Buckle Boy"

O.K. Folks,
Thanks to a good buddy on TN, I was able to set me up an electrolysis "relic cooker" to clean up my rusty finds.
Some of you had requested a picture of the old crusty buckle (pretzel) after electrolysis. This was my first attempt, and I think it came out pretty darn nice. Here's the before & after shots.
Any idea of the age now?

I am "cooking" my cannonball piece now, and will post a picture later.
This electrolysis is ALMOST as fun as MDing! ;D
Thanks for looking,
MM

A good TN member gave me an Electrolysis 101 class. A little clear coat to preserve it made it look purdy too. :D
I hate to ask a stupid question (not to good with history), but what years would this buckle fall into? (Colonial to early Federal)

Fantastic work with the electrolysis!

You'll have to share your secrets with me--I haven't had results that nice before.

I would say you're looking at 1780-1820. Others can feel free to chime in as well...
