Today's Civil War Artillery Hunt!

Hello all,

One of my friends, who has been getting into metal detecting, called me last night and said "get some sleep tonight because we're going to my grandfather's place in the morning." He's been telling me about this place for about a year now and I've been itching to go. His grandfather owns over 1,700 acres that butts up to a large battlefield in Tennessee. Anyway, we hopped in the truck this morning and took the long drive down to Tennessee. Once there, we started hunting a field at the base of a large hill and started finding artillery frags. The further up the hill we got, the more frags we found. There were also a lot of lead case shot balls. I'm still trying to get used to my new MXT Pro, so it was rather slow going starting out. We ended up staying on that hill all day in hopes of finding a whole shell, but no such luck. My friend found a nice exploded half of a James shell and a very heavy pocket full of frags. I ended up with a cool "shattered" 6 pounder solid shot, three pieces of a Borman that fit together (with fuse hole), a James base rib, some other unknown frags, a fired .69 Minnie, two fired Enfields, and three case shot balls. If gas weren't so high, we would probably be down there again tomorrow! We are planning to go back sometime next week. Wish us luck! Enjoy!

Great finds !
And yes it looks like everyone is going to have to look for sites close to home as gas is just going to get worse over the summer .
