yes i knew you were in Illinois. what site were you looking on? the one i was on showed scallorn [8] states and only showed [1] shadow and [1] photo for all [8] states! there were only [2] states that showed scullorn and turin in same state,,Missouri and Illinois.. i think the turin is to heavy in the base, to high and to wide almost to the edge of the sholders.. i know what you mean by under the weather, just got home from the hospital, pasemaker implant, doing just fine. very nice point whatever we call it.... T.

Tmodel I did some more research yesterday and I think you might be right. Finding good pics of a scallorn is quite a job! And I did finally find a site that says the scallorn is found in my area. Thanks for all the good info I appreciate it. I'm glad to hear your doing good after your hospital stay. I'm feeling much better today and hopefully by this weekend i'll be back out in the creeks and fields. HH

flintchsr - I don't believe that's a scallorn. Scallorn points are arrowheads and the piece you found I don't believe is an arrowheads, it's larger and probably predates them. I also believe the point you have is a first stage or largely unresharpened point which is part of the reason why it's hard to type - it's not a typical example. One suggestion would be to consider a shorter and narrower version of the same point and see if you can assign that visual image to an identified point type. I'd focus on a ~middle archaic time frame through I have no data to support that. I don't believe it's Mississippian and it doesn't fit with most Woodland types (Hopewell, Adena, others). I don't think it's an early piece, not supporting evidence, just doesn't look early. It may be that it doesn't fit a standard point type, which is a more common scenario than some people realize.

Actually I think the only logical course of action is for you to send me the point and I'll spend the next couple decades researching and thinking on the subject. Email me and I'll give you my mailing address.

Twitch, thanks for the comment since you mentioned to picture it as a shorter and narrower version I do have another point that is very similar to this one if i can find it I will post a pic. The point I pictured in this post doesn't look to have been resharpened since it was made. And the flaking on this point is different than any other point i've found. Very little flaking from tip to base in the center of the point only on the edges on both sides. Thanks for the comments it made me look at the point differently and i'll keep that in mind for future reference. But for now i think i'll have to keep it in the center of one of my frames. LOL. Thanks again.
