Today's Hunt at the Old Ghost Town

Went out today to do some detecting with a few buddies. Today was the last day that t-bucket could go out detecting due to shoulder surgery tomorrow. He was a nervous wreck, so I thought it would calm him down. Did manage to find this pie cut section of a Reale. It is the size a half dollar and I believe to be a 4 Reale. Thanks for looking. HH

Re: Today's Hunt at the Old Ghost Town

Hey Nice Find, but, as a newbie, can someone explain why this would be cut? Did they cut it on purpose for a smaller amount to be paid to someone like todays change? Put it this way, I didn't even know what a Reale was until joining this site a few weeks ago (and looking it up on Wikipedia)... Thanks, HH

Re: Today's Hunt at the Old Ghost Town

The reason for my 6 and 1/4 cents comment was an ad in a very early issue of a newspaper in my area (1829). I was showing it to BuckleBoy the other day when we were working an old site. It gives you an idea of how much value that little piece of silver had back then. The date in the ad is a typo. The subject matter is also an indicator that it's not from 1929. Just thought you'd like to see this. I personally don't own this newspaper, it's in the local library.

Thanks. That is very interesting. I found this where to town hatter was located. I wander if it was the price of a nice hat or maybe a gun hoster.

Maybe the hatter had a habit of playing baseball in his yard with his cut Reales.

This is the first cut silver I've ever seen come out of Illinois. How old is the site that you are working?

Thanks littlemac. Yes this is how they made change by cutting bits with a chisel. That's where the term bits of a dollar came.

She's a beauty, Camb! In Central PA, we never dig the cut ones. I would love to dig one in my career.

Neat find! I have never seen a 1/16th. bit before today!
"Two bits, Four bits, Six bits, a Dollar"!, George Washington, Founder of the United States Treasury.
I certainly hope the surgery goes well.
See my Avatar? A similiar pic of it was sent to The United States Treasury, U.S.S. Missouri, SONY Entertainment, and is posted on Treasurenet.
Thank you for sharing the 1/16 bit.
Tally ho!

Thanks Sorroque. I did not what it was till I read one of your posts. Treasure Ship Symbol. Cool Find.
