today was def. strange... first is there any counterfeit coin experts out there??? I found a piece today i was shocked to see one dime and an "O" when I cleaned it off... its comes up 48 VDI on my XLT... i thought is was a lead slug until the mud came off ... heres a pic next to a reg seated dime... its way bigger and but you can clearly make out the markings 1845-O one dime but its def. lead!!! hehe

and my daughter Kayleigh who usually finds arrowheads and marbles in the creek where we were at starts yelling "daddy I found a dinosaur" and I'm like "oh brother its probably a deer bone..." but I was wrong... now I have no idea what kinda bones these are but the rock is filled with hundreds of fossils all over it...if there are any fossil experts out there, please give me a hand!!...hh all jd

Hiya Kayleigh,

Awesome find you have there. Yours too, JD.

Kayleigh, I want to see the fossil, so bring it with you to the dinner Friday night.

See you guys soon!

;) RR

J.D. it looks like fossil fish vertebrae, but I don't know which species. Also the big dime looks like a cast pewter counterfeit, it's the right color for its age. When pewter is fresh out of the mold it looks and feels actually quite a bit like silver, though the jumbo size probably wouldn't have fooled anyone back in the day.

thanks guys its pretty cool i love the fake dime...Gerry Fortin is gonna use it in his seated dime counterfeit data base..he just told me I was also told that when it was made it probably looked just like a seated dime but when pewter corodes and becomes porous that it expands and that could account why it looks bigger:) hh all

The fossil looks like a backbone of some sort...maybe from a fish.
Great finds. Looks like you have a great place to hunt. Thanks for sharing. I think it is cool to find an old counterfeit coin.

Interesting coin or fake or whatever it turns out to be. Think maybe it's one of those childrens coins folks use to teach them about money? Regardless; nice find...

thanks for the info baker!!! thats great shes gonna be excited when I show her whats she has found.... hh jd

Those are some interesting coins you have there! and a great Fossil your daughter found! WTG :o

Old counterfeit coins like yours could have nice price tags. Hold onto that one! It should occupy a place of pride in your collection at least equal to one that a real dime would hold. This coin was not made to fool any collectors, but rather to spend. A period fake like that could be worth some bucks. Nice digs.

Nice finds as usual.

The fake dime is awesome. It's better than the real dime. It looks as old as it's dated. Probably a rare piece struck by somebody who knew what they were doing.

It's a very good metal to pass off as silver to. Pewter would be my guess. Then possibly coated with silver at some point likely.
