Toe Tap

Hello Forum,

I found this toe tap, and at first I didn't think much about it. After taking a closer look, I noticed writing on it "Pat Dec". Can anyone help me date this? I know that they used these on the front of the Brogan boot during the Civil War. Thanks for looking!

I've dug several from old home sites that dated prior to the civil war. When they were first used? I have no idea.
