Digging yesterday afternoon in a sports park in Baltimore County. The site was possibly a former gravel pit of the Harry T. Campbell company.

I recovered a deep target that had some green on it and was bent. I straightened it out by putting it between two boards and banging away.

It bears the numbers "5 0" on front and back.

A fellow digger mentioned that this may be a token given to an employee for hauling so many tons of gravel.

If you've dug one like this and know more I'd like to hear from you.

These (I call them "generic") trade tokens were sometimes used by general stores that chose not to have customized tokens made with their name and location. The benefit was that they were cheap for the merchant to buy, but the downside was that they could not tell whether the token came from them or from the store down the road. They were probably used ca. 1915-1930 give or take, found all over the country, and were in denominations from 5¢ to $1.

Thanks much, John, for sharing on the history of these 'generic' tokens.
