I dug one today as well , I was going with pistol ball but could be wrong .

More likely from a rifle, muzzleloading rifles were much more common than pistols.

A Hawken's .50 musket ball measures .47 to .48 in diameter. which is fairly close and yours looks a bit distorted which may account for the fractional difference. The patina on that ball would also suggest that it is is earlier than the 1900's.
