We need to know more on size and more pics. Thanks for posting:thumbsup:Tell your friend to join us.

Take your pics outside in the day light. That will really help on the flaking view of your artifact. We need to see front, back, side and a close up of the base. It looks old but without a closer view it will just be a guess. Welcome to the site, rock

What state?
Did your friend find this himself?

Monster, been trying to get my friend online for 15 years. It's about 4-5 long. Gator from Illinois, my friend said he found it in a virgin field. Next time,I see him will add more pictures. Thanks guys.

I looked at this piece and immediately knew it was from VA. Or NC. It's a flaked adze. I have only seen that "U or V" shaped base on NC and VA. Artifacts. Pieces similar to this one found in other states normally have a flat base or slightly rounded base. Not sure why.

It was found in Illinois ..he said.."virgin field"

Looks like a blunt point for knocking down game but not killing it outright.

Very rare find.

"Blunts" are only misconceptions.
Most are Hafted scrapers .
There Is no evidence To suggest Anyone ever intended To go out on a hunt And try to just bruise an animal.
It makes no sence.. I don't know how that got started.

If anything it is going to be a rework. Meaning it probably had a sharp tip on it and then broke so they made a round nosed knife out of it. But in that way of thinking it looks quite long so why not just put another tip on it? So that makes me believe it was made like this on purpose as a cutting tool. Just thinking out loud.

Foot in mouth! I suppose I should travel to more states and view artifacts. Lol! I meant to put Illinois as well. Uuuummmm.... Yeah, Illinois as well as NC and VA. Lol! Sorry fellas over look me!!

I still say flaked adze. Regardless of where it came from. See the notch on the side? I think it was wrapped to the notch. But.... I've said too much senseless stuff here already.

Thanks for opinions everyone. N C thanks for effort, you know way more than I do. Gator it was the first time the field was ever plowed, not a field where you look for virgins lol

And I was already packing my bags!

This is a hoe I found they have found many like these in Illinois I didn't believe it at first but it is well it won't upload but ill send it later

Here it is the place I found the article was from the Olmsted museum if you are interested this is a hoe made of Dover chert

I've read all the replies and here is what I think, for what it's worth.

First, it is not a Blunt used to knock down animals without killing them. Like Gator said, that is a misconception of Hafted Scrapers. The old timers called them Blunts and that where that's notion came from.

Second, from the looks of the picture it looks to be to thin to have been a Hoe. These type Tools were always very sturdy so the they could be used with lots of pressure to break open the soil so it could be planted. A thin Blade such as this would snap very quickly with any type of pressure applied to it.

It could be a large Hafted Scraper. That is one possibility. The other is like rock mentioned and it is a reworked Knife that had the tip broken off if it.

Is there any grinding along the upper edges of the base on both sides? It has the basal shape of a Paleo piece and I did actually see a Clovis found once that had been reworked into a Hafted Scraper. First time we took a guy hunting and the lucky SOB finds a Clovis Hafted Scraper. Fluted on both sides and highly ground. lol

Reaper, the next time I see my friend,I will take several pictures and post. Thanks

That hoe is only 1/4 inch thick I swore it was a hafted scraper blade but I was wrong lol it is very nice for sure
