I really hate that stuff......and boy is it hot in the summer.....I dont know why they put that junk on the playgrounds....You cant rake it....it contains shredded wire.....Its to hot for little kids to play on in the heat.....It leaves everything black....it smells .......You cant dig in it.....I am on a roll now .....Hahaha

I found one school with these sheaded tire covering. It was pure rubber, no wires or other metal thing mixed in and I had really good luck there. I found quite a lot of coins and some jewelry. It was maybe a bit above average compared to the average woodchip lot. I can look in my log tonight to find the exact totals. I did notice A LOT of gross mildue and mold growths under the surface too when I "dug" a target. Scary!

:)

My brother & I hunted a school lot like that this summer. No wires. We did real well there. At another school 1 town over a school had little rubber worms instead of chunks. we did well there also. They were hot though

i detected one once, nothing really different other than the clad was clean

shredded rubber NOT good ::)

The authorities use this junk because it stays put unlike sand or wood chips. Our parks dept wanted to use this stuff in a couple playground areas and changed their minds due to people talking up about it. Now they use ground up Christmas trees as mulch. Smells better too.

seems like a great place to harbour mold and mildew. yuck

well the teachers hate that stuff..said it reflects the heat in the hot weather and makes it unbearable for them and the kids... boy was I black when I finally left there.

this sounds like some ploy to find a use for recycled tires.

That's correct. They also recycle tires into large commercial-type floormats. The playground covering was big for awhile, it didn't track in like sand or pea gravel, and it gave alittle more cusion. Funny thing is now you have to pay to dispose of tires, even to the tire dealer you buy new tires from, yet there's a market for them.

The steel belts were probably what was causing erratic signals.
