One of my contact tellers brought in a trade dollar from the 1843 or something like that. Looked like it was real. She mentioned someone told her it was fake.

I tested it with a magnet and it stuck. So it turns out its a clad fake. Too bad.

Unfortunately there are as many fake trade dollars as authentic ones. Too bad

that is unfourtinate. If somebody could counterfeit a coin for less than it's value, it's being counterfeited, especially rare dates. I read somewhere but don't remember which coins... but there are like 3x more fakes out there than the actual authentic coins...

HH!

Always stay away from Trade Dollars and Seated Liberty Dollars ( unless you are dealing with a reputible and highly knowledgable seller ) These are some of the most common fakes among many produced by our " friends " in China

I have a stack of 12 fake Trade Dollars I got when I got a bag of Ike's. I couldn't believe what I was looking at when I first pulled them out, I went to look them up and realized they all had mint marks that did not exist for those years! Lesson to the Chinese, get a Red Book.

That's to bad. I find a lot of Peace and Morgans that are fake.

I recall a guy showed me a bunch of peace dollars he bought for $3 at a swap meet. Just the feel of them wasn't right. They were too light and weakly struck. Mostly likely fakes.

Yep, stay away from trade dollars unless you know the seller. Bought one for about the intrinsic value of a silver dollar at a flea market, figured why not. It wasn't until later on in the evening that I knew it was fake, why? Wrong rotation :laughing7: Ah well, lesson learned.

Interestingly though most of my fakes I've picked up don't stick to a magnet, I think they are made out of some sort of alloy of nickel silver or white-ish brass. They don't appear to be plated.

Either way, I find fakes somewhat interesting to collect, especially the poor ones.

The fake silver dollars I have seen do not stick to a magnet... Pretty sad that we even need to worry about that sh!t.
