trashcan silver dollar & small cache!!

I was changing out trash in one of the open space fishing lakes I maintain at work today, when I lifted the lid on the trashcan I saw a plastic jar half full of coins on top. Unfortunatly They turned out to be coins from all over, Mexico, Australia, Barbados, Europe, Germany, Portugal, Phillipines, France. But the beautiful 1886 Morgan dollar stuck out like a sore thumb in the bunch. I accidently let out a victory holler in the parking lot, people fishing nearby must have thought I was nuts. Anyway I can't for the life of me figure out why anyone would throw these away, especially the silver dollar, you can see the condition, all I did was rinse it in water.

Re: trashcan silver dollar & small cache!!

Re: trashcan silver dollar & small cache!!

I am thinking they may be stolen and someone tried to dump them quickly.........but who knows? great find!

Re: trashcan silver dollar & small cache!!

some nearby stoner type theif swiped someones coin stash ---- in their rush to sort out -- get the easily modern clad "spendible" american coins they missed a good one,--the dollar ( they must be young or dumb or both and thought it a "foreign coin")- thats a $20 coin all day long --- however its also highly noticible though if one were to try to sell it. -- then they dumped the "excess" or junk foreign coins in the trash at the park to get rid of the evidence * --count on it

Re: trashcan silver dollar & small cache!!

nice find!!!

Re: trashcan silver dollar & small cache!!

I agree with Ivan. Looks like a quick ditching job rather than someone just randomly chunking their coin collection! You were at the right place at the right time! Good for you! :icon_thumleft:

Make sure the obverse and reverse are properly oriented; if they aren't, you know it's a fake.

It's no fake, it's the real deal.

Re: trashcan silver dollar & small cache!!

That Morgan is a great find. Now besides searching beaches, fairgrounds, ski lifts, camp grounds, homesteads, farmland, etc; I have to look in every trashcan. :D

Re: trashcan silver dollar & small cache!!

well if you found it full of purses and wallets -=-- its clear you've found a thiefs "dump spot" a remote place that he uses to get rid of the" evidence" of his crimes if theres that many to fill a can hes no one time crook but a seasoned pro --- so be on the look out as he might attempt to mug / rob from you -- guys like that rob homes when no ones there and break into vechiles-- snatch purses from umlocked cars or bust windows to get to em -- and stick up folks for their purse / wallets .
