🥇 BANNER TREASURE - RARE VIKING SILVER INGOT...UPDATE

I think I'm finally getting the hang of this detecting lark

Dad & I went out today expecting a few Roman Coins as I had decided to carry on from where I had the Roman Silver last week. On the very first run after 5 minutes & 3 digs into the hunt, out pops a Silver Ingot. I look at it & immediately think Viking, but hold on a second we are on the edge of a Roman site So I begin convincing myself it must be Roman but might be Viking After some quick research I found the following:

So I'm 99% sure I have my first Viking circa 1000AD Silver Ingot, often melted down from Saxon plunder & then traded in handy sized ingots These are considered Rare & was on my impossible list but there it was with no other Saxon/Viking age items on the edge of a Roman Site.

We carried on for 1 hour with no other finds, so moved to the field next door & got the following:

Large Roman Lead Steelyard Weight
Broken Roman Bronze Bracelet
Broken Silver Hammered of Ed I
7 Roman Bronze coins, 1 we need - Ses. of Gordian III AD240

I have been watching this, but haven't commented till you got the nod on it being Viking, now you have that's a fantastic find, I knew it would make Banner, but thought it might take a while

less than 65 recorded ..... had a few chunks of hack Silver, but a full ingot , ...these would have been made from Viking hack silver(booty) and then melted into ingots, cast in one part stones for easier transportation, the weights are usually grouped around divisions of 100 gr.

Thanks for all the kind comments & banner votes, it does look good up there. Like most great finds it just came out the blue. Kind of made Dad & I laugh quite a bit as we have this habit of finishing a day just 1 run away from a good find. This was one of those exciting beginnings of a hunt when you think is this the start or the finish of the site (or even the middle) . As it turns out it was the end, but you don't hear us complaining about that one

Its all in the replies, but to answer your question, they give a fair market value + historial significance factor, but we are not talking a lot of money as its not very commercial.

Grrrr! Here i am, sat in the middle of Vikingland, and the sod's won't let me detect!

Excellent find mate and well worthy of the banner. Congrats.

Even today, i still find more silver than gold on the beaches. It's odd how these scandinavians have always preferred silver.
