Here in NY , the weather is just great with the temp in the upper 50's Tim and I decided to go out this sunday .So I call him first thing this morning and he was Ill....Yes under the weather ,to much digging yesterday ....So now the decision is do I go myself or just stay home....No way off I went , I decided to go to an area that I have been to 2 years ago and have not been back since.
Last year just took up so much of our detecting time when I found the 2 old cellar hole sites...So now with the plan in hand I pulled out some old maps and headed to the Little Valley NY area...here I have found a number of old cellarholes and have no problem getting permission to hunt them....First one was kinda slow ,with only an 1910 wheat back penny and a boot heal...it was time to move on . The next one was a little better not much junk but good signals since the first item was a nice sleigh bell but it was the newer type...so that was something to get excited about...
Now this place was nice because the ground was easy to dig and the grass is nice and matted down from the snow , the next find was 2 more wheat pennies , a 1925 and 1920 green but nice....then out came another sleigh bell this one was different . I have not found one like this so its new to the collection.
Finally with the days nice and long now with day light savings time here in the north east I decided to go and check out one more site and I turned out to be well worth it...This cellar hole was located right on the corner of an intersection on one of those old back roads and I was in luck there was a guy just hanging out on the porch of the house across form the cellar hole....so as I parked my truck he came walking over and asked what I was doing and I said I notice that old cellar hole for some time now and would you mind if I detected it with my metal detector.....and he said like most people do, sure knock you self out...and as we were talking he said he always wanted to see how those things worked ...so with no time to waste off I went! I started where I always do right in the front of the house and within 5 minutes I had a large cent 1817 and what was funny was I found one last week also with the same date.....at only 6 inches it hit good and know it was a good find....after an hour i had 2 more large cents , but I was unable to make out the dates on both. So after 2 hours had a nice pewter flat button and a couple regular flats...Then got a monster hit ,a broken bell that was a nice piece at one time so now that this story is getting kinda long ....the old timer that gave me permission came over to see what I found and he could not believe it ....but after we talked for a few more minutes he said anytime I want to detect here ,your more than welcome.....I said thanks!!!!
It turned out to be a good day all around.... Seeker

one thing ive always wondered, why would coins be in a cellar ? i hear of large cents being found in cellars, just curious if anyone knows why the coins are there ???

they get lost in the upper part of the structure then when it decays and falls aprt into the cellar hole ...sound about right or they were lost in the cellar looking for potatos they stored or the bottle of whiskey ::) hey seek is that lead foil?

Redbird,
Cellar holes usually are the only remaining evidence of where an old homestead existed. I assume Seeker found the coins and artifacts in what would have been the yard. Many times the only evidence of an old home site may be trees or bushes that are not natural to the environment such as apple trees and lilac bushes.

Nice hunt Seeker. I love those types of finds. What is the tag/fob looking thing in the pic to the right. Does it have anything on it. Or is it just plain.
