Two "firsts" today !!!!

Went down to another waterfront area in downtown Pensacola today. Found my first silver coin, a 1925 Quarter (standing liberty?), and a copper ring(band).

The quarter is in near pristine condition right out of the dirt. I only cleaned it with water and rubbed with my finger.

The ring was completely covered in petina but I managed to clean it up slightly to reveal a stamping on the inside with the letters "A K" - the second photo clearly shows the"K".

This week has been great...started it off with finding an old pocket watch (posted 11/20/06). I found a bunch of other interesting items today but I'm way to tired to photo and post them.

Re: Two "firsts" today !!!!

Way to start your silver with a bang!
Standing Liberty Quaters (SLQ's), were even redesigned because the dates wore off too easily. And even the redesigned die with the recessed date wore down!...Both SLQs I've found are more worn than ANY Washington silver I have dug!!

HH!!

Re: Two "firsts" today !!!!

I have a theory on why the condition of this quarter is as fine as it is.
Here goes.....

The area where I dug it up from was historically residential. In 1926, a severe hurricane struck Pensacola and the storm surge literally washed away most of the homes in this area and several blocks inland. This land has not been developed since that hurricane and has been county property ever since. In fact, it was so overgrown with brush until a year ago that no one would dare walk through this area.
So the "what if" could be that this coin was lightly circulated until 1926 and that it was in one of the homes that was demolished during the storm and covered in a blanket of storm driven sand and other debris waiting for yours truly to pick it up 80 years later. The household debris that I found in this area at the same approximate depth would lend a bit of credence to that theory as well.

I found a pocket watch at that location today as well - my second pocket watch in 4 days by the way. I will be posting it as soon as I get a chance to take some pics.
