I was down south Jersey in the field nearby the one I found my namesake treble stand d colour button and found these two coins stuck together in the corn field about 8 inches down. Nice iron patch there, was about the only high tone I heard, VDI was all over the place. But I knew I had to dig it out of its muddy grave. I can see some letters on the bigger coin (27mm) the smaller one (24mm) is pretty much toast. Better post it now because this is today's finds. They are both taking a olive oil bath. I'll keep you posted.
Thanks for looking!

Interesting find. Can't wait for follow up pics once you had a chance to clean them up.

With those diameters - you may have a "Braided Hair" large cent and possibly the half cent of the same design - the smaller could be
a two cent piece - though the diameter should be 23 mill. Keep us posted !

Looks like a couple good candidates for hydrogen peroxide!

I so screwed up, I threw it into the oil forgetting all about trying the peroxide again. I'm going to try a light Dawn soap and water then peroxide baths, I'm not going to be able to get much, I can tell already, they either come out of the ground readable or not. Not much you can do with toast.

Be Sure To Post Some Cleaned Up Pics. And I Agree, If A Coin Comes Out Worn And Flat There Is No Method To Magically Bring Back The Detail. But If A Coin Has A Dirt Crust, Peroxide Seems To Work For Me Most Of The Time.

Hope you can get them cleaned up a bit.....good luck!

Nice finds! You may get something readable off them!

Well, that's as good as it's going to get, there are a few letters on the bigger coin. It's not like the one I found in the church in Phila, where there was a grud on it covering up the coin this has fertilizer damage. It was exciting when it first came out of the hole, maybe today I might get lucky? (or should I say luckier)
Thanks for looking, HH
