Last fall I had made a couple of trips to a site I had found on an 1862 map, central ohio. The site was not shown on the 1875 map. There was plenty of targets, iron that is. I was lucky enough to find two shield nickels, but they were crusty. I soaked for months in olive oil with little luck on cleaning, very frustrating. I saw someone online that had cleaned his and he told me that he used an SOS pad. So I tried it and was able to clean enough to get dates. 1866 and 67. If you notice, the 66 has lines (rays) between the stars.

Keep Swinging!!

Hi MP-
Cool stuff! Still looking for 1st shield nic. Hey, in the pic with the big piece of chain, there is a round object with a rectangle in it next to your coins, what is that?? I found one exactly like it, but do not know what it is. Thanks!

That piece is how handles where mounted to either cross cut saws or also on a scythe

Very nice nickels, I have not found anything older than a buffalo, that was last year. This year my oldest nickel was a Jefferson! It was a 1939, sort of old but not from the 1860's. Nice finds, one would have been great but two is incredible.

Congrats on getting the dates. I know people probably cringe at the thought of using a sos pad, but nickels are usually pretty toasted to begin with, so if you can do a gentle sos polishing you can recover some detail and possibly get dates. Congrats on 2 Shields, I have only found 2 and 1 was an accident. Great research on your site let us know what else comes out of there!

Nice job on cleaning those Great Finds. Next time put them in a pot of Boiling Water, with about 1 drop of Dish Detergent. Then take a wooden tooth pick to scrape off the crud 014.JPG ..Picture of some of my Nickels off of the Beach using this method

That's a very interesting technique I had not heard yet. I will try that one. I can get pretty aggressive with cleaning if I have to. So, if I can actually find gentler ways that really work, I'm all for it. Thanks for the info!

Nice finds. I know that what I am about to say will make some people go out of their minds... but, I've done some experimenting with nickles, and so far I have found that hydrogen peroxide and ammonia both work well... If they were mine, I would start with the straight 3% hydrogen peroxide from the store. If that doesn't do enough, straight ammonia, and if that doesn't cut it, do a 50/50 of the peroxide and ammonia. I would estimate any of them should clean the nickel in 1-2 hours, though I have left nickels in all 3 for 24 hours with no degradation of detail.
