Last fall I had made a couple of trips to a site I had found on an 1862 map, central ohio. The site was not shown on the 1875 map. There was plenty of targets, iron that is. I was lucky enough to find two shield nickels, but they were crusty. I soaked for months in olive oil with little luck on cleaning, very frustrating. I saw someone online that had cleaned his and he told me that he used an SOS pad. So I tried it and was able to clean enough to get dates. 1866 and 67. If you notice, the 66 has lines (rays) between the stars.

Keep Swinging!!

Nice finds on both the nickels and the key. Problem with cleaning nickels is that they corrode. If the detail has been corroded off the coin then all the cleaning in the world won't bring it back. Sometimes the details are corroded and ready to fall off the coins. Cleaning can remove these details in a hurry. In any event, shield nickels are scarce coming out of the ground and you managed to find both types, with and without rays. Knock them both off the bucket list. Way to go!

Nice coin and key recovery! The iron looks interesting.
