two sided metates

Almost all of ours are. Some of them worked all the way through.

Most here are.

Yes sir. I have stacks of them. Rare that they are not worked both sides. Even the lap stones.

Well there goes my thoughts that the few I have are on the rare side.

Haha. I like to think all my artifacts are rare! Here is a rare one I left on a stump after the plow drug it around. I am debating on hauling it out if it is still there. It was double dipped.

So is this one just not nearly as used as the other I was thinking this was used for grinding something like nuts

I have one that I found it is only on one side as a dimple but even the dimple isnt real easy to see so I dont believe it was used for very long. They probably found one they liked better. I dont find hardly any grinding bases here just the Grinders.

Here is both sides of my best one.ARB_0727.webp

Geesh.. one matate fits all.
A little A.D.D. with that one?

Not sure we are talking about the same thing. The pictures show rocks with holes ground in them. My metate's are used to grind grains using a mano. One of mine has a 3" deep dish on it. If I knew how I would post some photo's.

There are different types of manos and matate.. sounds like you might have one that was made to be used with a type of mano also called a roller pestle.
The matate posted above had it's indents made with a mano.

If someone at there wants to PM me there mailing address I will send some hard photos of what have.

Reviewing Terry Baxters book which show photo's and descriptions, the SW metate's which I have are as described. Mine for the most part are rocks that are 12" to 14" , flat with a large warn flat area in the middle of the rock which appears to have been made with a mano. Out side of the large rock TN posted a photo of which is a large flat rock with a warn spot on the middle, the other rocks look much different.

If your cell phone will take a pic you can send it to somebody on here that has access to the site and they can then upload it for you. I have had it done for me but dont know how to do it. I have a old cell phone.

I gotcha Jon I'll send pics when I get home ;)

Yowza.. his matate bigger than my matate.
