That style buckle is called a Hagner plate. Designed by Col. Hagner They were used from 1872 to 1902. In the early 1900's the army conducted maneuvers in some areas. In some of the maneuvers they followed the routes of civil war troops and camped in the same sites. Because of this sometimes these plates and other Span-Am period items are dug in civil war sites.
Not civil war but still a cool find
