I was hunting the same area that I found what I believe to be a large cent(worn totally smooth, but sent to Shakey to do electrolisis on) I found this button that say U.S on it.... it is about the size of a silver dollar.... the outer layer is either brass or copper... but it is very thin and layed over a pot metal underside.... it appears that there was a buckle of some sort on the side of the back of the button..... I am wondering what this is for sure.... and what era it is from.... I am sad that it is in such poor condition..... any help is GREATLY appreciated!

Looks like a rosette. Date would be a guess but I would say WWI

Yup... can make out the buckle bar on the back buried in rust...

Thats a neat find! Brass plate over iron...

My guess is the same. Came off some horse or mule bridle dating back to WW1
Nice find. HH and good luck on cleaning that LC.
