I took my trusty old Ultra GTA500 to an old Pre-Revolutionary War Farmhouse site. This farmhouse was taken down board by board and the lumber recycled for reuse. I managed to find this broken axe head which was buried about eight inches deep. As you can see it is well worn and must have broken on the down swing by the way it split.

The top photos of the axe are the before with all the rust encrusted on it, and there was plenty of it there. After cleaning the axe head you can see that this was a well used tool. There are chips and dings all over it, a typical farmers tool.

I also found what I thought was a part of a door bell, but turned out to be a washer. I also found this part of a toy gun which I thought was interesting. I’m going to have to go back and see what else is hidden in the earth. There must be plenty of interesting items left to find.

After donating my Radio Shack Microna to my kids to rip apart for a science project, I bought my first real metal detector, one that did exactly what it was supposed to do. That was also the Ultra 500. My one season with the Radio Shack got me about $13.00. My first year with my Garrett, I found $260.00. I found literally thousands of coins with my Ultra 500. I moved up the ladder to other Garrett's, learned them well and have never looked back. :)
