Uncle Sam & a Mercury

A little history on the place before I tell you about the finds from today.........In 2004 , my mom and dad bought a place in Pawhuska, Okla. that used to belong to a full blood Osage Indian man. The house was built in the late 1800's. The Osage man had 2 wives and the house was [at one time] a duplex---one end of the house for each wife :o .
If you don't know the history of the Osages, they were and still are one of the richest Indians ever, because of the vast amounts of oil discovered on their lands.
This house my mom and dad bought has been a treasure trove for me---I have found so much stuff! Barber coins, Mercury coins, Indian and Wheat Pennies, marbles, pocket watches, jewelry, and misc. other stuff. See more of the stuff I found here: http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php/topic,217571.0.html
Today, I decided to work an area of the yard where I think the trash pit was, or maybe even the outhouse. The area is right out the backdoor of the house, and is on a little bank, kinda where the yard slants off. I think there was a fence line that used to run along this bank. It is a very trashy area, so I put my Sniper coil on and tried to get a good signal. There are a zillion nails in this area, but I got a good beep and started digging. Found a Mercury right off the bat, then Uncle Sam popped up. Lots of buttons, snaps, & marbles were next. Next came the 'Kady' thing, an old wooden brush handle, top of a perfume/scent bottle with a glass stopper, doll legs, glass beads, cuff link and lots of flow blue pottery pieces. I dug all this stuff in a small area(about 3 feet across). I also used a sifter so I wouldn't miss anything---was finding stuff as deep as 10" .
Here's some pictures.......What is the Uncle Sam thing---a lapel pin? how old is this piece? And what is the "Kady" thing?
Thanks for looking!

What a treat of a thread! and I can't believe I missed the old post, (everyone click on the link, if you haven't yet!) It's so small town, I just love it! Buckshot and I are kinda the same way, nothing we find is valuable, but you stop and think about the people who lost it! At first I thought Kady was the MKT, but the railroad was the 'Katy' wasn't it? Really enjoyed both posts!!!! :hello2:
I think the Kady thing is some kind of overall/clothing buckle, maybe.
The amount of stuff I've found in this yard is amazing, Lisa! I started out with a little Bounty Hunter metal detector and wore it completely out---it literally fell apart! Do you know I even found a piece of pink flint(it was a broken scraper) in the trash pit area?! Maybe they carried this in with them as they were transitioning over to the "white mans way" of life? And many little bells---I wonder if maybe they weren't some kind of bells worn on one of their Indian dance outfits.
Its been such a fun yard to detect!

Hey Carmon, Your Uncle Sam badge/button is surely patriotic and war related. What war i'm not for sure. Could be Spanish American or WW1? Found a pic of a similar badge.. Span/Am War period...
Thanks for that info, Buckshot---I wasn't sure what time period this might have came from. I just did a completed search on eBay and found a lapel stud just like mine and it said its from the Spanish American War(1898). That's just about the time this house was built.
It really makes the history of this place come alive when I find stuff like this!

Thanks for the comments!

Carmon~~

Thanks Dave :hello: --I bet there are yards like this all over Pawhuska(or even all over Oklahoma). I've been eyeballing a couple of other places in town that look really good--maybe I'll work up the nerve to ask permission someday!
