For appeasing the fishgods, getting rid of old anchors, and setting up massive fish beds. One the 3rd Tuesday of every month, all old anchors were taken to a specific spot on the sea, and dumped overboard. Because this also gave you good fishing luck, if you didn't have an old anchor, then you just took a big rock out there and threw it over.
There was also a tune, that was sung, as the anchors(rocks) were thrown over. It goes something like this;

Pat, they've already investigated that theory but they were able to determine that the Jefferson's song didn't exist in popular culture until the mid to late medieval period. Interestingly enough though, several of the large stones they were able to bring to the surface were sculpted into the shape of Bud's hair.
