Sorry Jersey devl but I believe your button is a civilian button made to look like a navy. If the back is still in it it probably has a tin back and either a tin shank or a hump in the back with 2 holes (self shank). A real navy button will have finer detail and a better looking eagle and anchor. I think you can still find the buttons, like you dug, in fabric stores today.

Thats where I got the idea from ,once I saw that I thought I was golden. The back is gone and I threw it in all metal and still couldnt find the back (2 piece) ...the area it was from I heard was civil war meeting area from south bend IN back in the day Ive found nothing to confirm this and was hoping this was the break I was looking for1 Thanks again! You're welcome. Sorry I couldn't give you better news. Here's a link to a civil war period navy.

You might want to remember the site www.civilwarbuttons.com
William Leigh is one of the most knowledgeable people there is on military buttons. I've known him and his dad for years and both are as honest and knowledgeable as anyone you will meet. The site will change with his inventory but it can be a good reference.
Hope you find a good civil war button soon
