I think you're on the right track. I would guess matchbox cover due to it's size/text and design. That's a neat relic and appear to have some age to it :icon_thumright:

I have seen one of these before. Yes, its a beautiful WWI matchbook cover. The 8 different branches of the US Army are represented around the edges. A very cool find! :icon_thumright:

Correct me if Im wrong but starting top left we have the Infantry, Artillery, Signal Corps, Corps of Engineers, Medical Corps, Ordnance Corps, Calvary, and the bottom right Quartermaster Corps.

With no Armor (Calvary), no Air Defense, this must be WWI. Another find for the 4H kids. :icon_thumright: You find all the good stuff!

And wouldn't it be nice if the five stars under the eagle were eventually found to represent the rank of the person who lost this case; or is that too much to hope for?

funny, I did'nt realize the writing in the center until I saw the post. Amazing how much better things look photogrphed... Reads: Military Novelty co. Grand Haven Michigan. Grand haven is south of Muskegon On Lake Michigan near Holland. Grand Haven sports the famous Coast Guard festival held annualy.

There were at least two other novelty companies in Grand Haven during this time: American Brass Novelty Co (sheet metal and castings) and Peerless Novelty Co. (metal novelties). Either one of them might have been doing business as American Military Novelty Co. at the time---and maybe one or both of those companies is still in business today--with another name--to research.

As suspected, , Stanco Metal Products, Inc., formerly known as Peerless Novelty Company, was incorporated in 1917 and today is still based in Grand Haven, Michigan.

Do you think there is a connection to American Military Novelty Co.?

A Charter Member needs to search right here at TN. There was one posted a while back that was exactly the same as far as I remember and may have some more info.

If 4-H wishes to pursue it further, he may be able to tell us if the research above ends with a dead end or another lead towards the answer.
