Both of these items were found at a remote 1700's home site. No foundation or any stones. Items were quite deep. The larger tube is about 3" long and 1/2" wide and full of tightly wound cotton string with remains of solid wood in the right side. It is very fragile and came apart unfortunately. Other smaller tube has faint Gold leaf showing and also a wood end that looks like an eraser but is not. I'm wondering if the larger tube was some kind of fuel storage lighting implement on the end of what was a wood shaft. Kind of like the ones I use to see in church to light hard to reach candles. Smaller tube maybe part of a writing instrument? Both found about a week ago. Also found were two Silver coins. One a Massachusetts Colony Oak Tree Shilling 1654 other coin smaller but mostly smooth. Will post them later in New Finds. Many thanks for any responses!

They look like parts to a mechanical pencil, but the the string filling has me baffled.

The cotton string is thread. It's a pocket or chatelaine sewing kit.

The smaller tube may be a needle case.

Hard to determine age. I'd guess mid to late 19th C.
