A couple of years ago someone sent me this photo of a tool they were looking to identify, I've shown it to a number of tool collectors but no one has had an answer. Anyone here recognize it?

There is a patent date on it but it's badly pitted and impossible to read.

It looks like an antique ice shaver with the head missing. The one below is not exactly like yours, but most had an open frame, then a head similar to a large shaving razor. Interesting, Breezie

Why not let the Forum have a look at the patent No?
There's some clever people in here......excluding me....
Cheers

What does that tip look like??

The tip is solid with no hole on the end. I would like the ice shaver idea more if there was a hole there. I don't own this tool but know two other people who do, one of them sent me these photos of the patent date:

He already checked all numbers for the following dates: 8/16/92, 8/16/98, 4/16/95.

Here is the owner's description of it:

"The cross bar is somewhat like the shape of a triangle. But think of the shape of a
knife blade, that is the back side of the blade is thick and tapers to a sharp edge.
The edge farthest away from the handle is the sharp edge. It really isn't sharp but it is very
thin.

The end is solid. The entire piece was cast in one piece."

Here is a photo of the other similar tool, it must have had a different kind of handle or maybe none at all:

After seeing closer pics, I still think it is a 'scraper/shaver' of some description, but instead of scraping ice, it could be a leather hide/hair scraper. Breezie

First thing that popped into my mind was a handle to a rug beater. :dontknow:
Good luck!

All I can see so far is PAT AUG 16 but with a partial date I feel its solvable.

Just a guess but looks like some kind of kitchen utensil.(collander,trivet,ect.) I think there is more to it on the end that is missing.
Take Care,
Pete, :hello:

Could it be PAT AUG 16, 09 ? ...or 07 ? ...or 89 ?

I don't know but can't see it being a shaving tool for food with the painted part getting all in the food each time you use it.Just saying. :-\

Probably not, U.S. patents were almost always issued on a Tuesday, so if I know the day and month but not the year, I usually go to the site below and look for years when the date is on a Tuesday.

http://www.timeanddate.com/calendar/?year=1898&country=1

As I mentioned earlier, the owner said he already checked all numbers for the following dates: 8/16/92, 8/16/98, 4/16/95. I think AUG is correct, 16 looks probable but it's hard to say for sure, and obviously the year could be a number of different dates.

Hovering in the back of my mind is a removable handle for a heavy cook pot , such as a canner .
Would have been a pair of them .

That tool is very similar. What is it? One end may be inside the handle and/or it may be interchangable or broken.

We could use more pics from different angles. Is there a hole in the end?
