Up the Arkansas River today

I was down in Canon City today and these are some of the sites along the way up the river. It was hot down in Canon City, but still pretty nippy up in Leadville.

I love that stretch of river. I have always wanted to hike from Leadville down to Canon. Definatly my favorite! Great pictures. Leadville still looks buried. Sometimes we cross country up towards mosquito pass. Love the views!

When I was living in Oklahoma, my ex, her mother and sister took her father's Ranger bass boat from Arkansas to Oklahoma on the Arkansas River. I guess the locals made traveling through the locks and dams quite an interesting trip with the water balloons they were bombarded with. Looks like a great trip!

Ah, the Arkansas River. At one time it was a beautiful place to visit, fish and camp. Then all the water started being used by the farmers to the west. We sued Colorado to get the water released from their dam and won, but have yet to see it released. That was 10 years ago.

Buffalo Peaks

what peak is that and what kind of elevation.. On my bucketlist is to climb a 14er been looking at elbert for one of my next trips..

'Buffalo Peaks' is the collective name of those, kha924. They're wsw of Fairplay on the southern end of the Mosquito Range, and only a little over 13,000. Straight west of these peaks across the Arkansas River is the Collegiate Range, with a lot of 14'ers. Mt. Elbert, that you mentioned, is to the west and a little north of this pic. I have no clue why you would want to do it, but Mt. Elbert would be a good one to climb.

I did climb Elbert many moon's ago. Me and this kid from New York. Big city boy he was and he still lives in the San Luis valley. I've run into him over the years and he's transformed into a real, not a pretend cowboy. He started working the ranches down that way a long time ago. You see him today and you'd never guess he was once a kid raised up in New York City. I've always enjoyed hiking around the Buffalo peaks area when I lived up there. It's quiet up there and hardly anyone goes in those mountains like they do in a majestic Collegiate range. There are many native camp sites in and around the Buffalo mountains and undisturbed hidden places. Not much in the way of mining activity was ever up in there either.
