Hello Treasure Hunters!

This is an update form my post the other day, http://www.treasurenet.com/forums/todays-finds/322030-sterling-cross-wheaties-new-spot.html

This truly was my best hunt yet! After finding the cross, I had popped up what I thought was another washer or a knockout. A blob for sure. I really payed no attention to it until last night as it was not "coin size". LOL, Well, at least that I knew of!!! I washed away the mud to find a green patina! Jeeeze, I should have taken a photo.... No detail what so ever, so I began soaking and scrubbing with a soft brush. A few hours later.... Clean enough but still no detail :-( Maybe a rubbing? and YES!!!! Some detail at last!!!! Is that "one cent I see"?

Ok... Now I was excited for sure!!! How on earth can I bring out more detail ??? Then it hit me! Being a photographer, I decided to put my skills to work and capture it with a very low angle of light! It worked!!! My First LARGE CENT!!!

Time has not been good to her at all but I am still thrilled!!!! I think it must have been very well worn before being lost to the dirt. As you can see, the obverse is gone entirely. :-( Found about 8" down (reading quarter) near the Erie Barge Canal and could have very well been lost during it's construction! No date is kinda a bummer but WHOOOOO-HOOOOOOW!!!!! A personal BANNER find for me!

Thanks for sharing and HH, Jim

THATS A GREAT FIND ANYDAY OF THE WEEK CONGRATS

Great find Jimmey just starting here and yet to find my first coin. But I sure am cleaning the junk out of the yard.

Just wondering if a light electrolysis might help that large cent? I watched this video (link below) anybody else have some thoughts on this?

Thanks Webatch, It may have been faster. I have not tried it yet but may give it a shot in the future

Jimmey I am new to all this so get some more experienced advice before messing something up. I just saw that video when watching MD videos on youtube and thought it might be fun to try.

Congrats on your large cent! The one i found i can't see any detailat all,but know it's a largecent by size and the copper! HH

based on what i see and don't see i believe what you have is a classic head 1808 to 1814

Thanks fmerg, I was thinking it was a later large cent (1816 - 1857) due to the wreath going around with the leaves pointing in one direction instead of a right and left mirror image. Any other feed back?

the 1808-1814 used the same style wreath the only difference is the berry's on the wreath

that's a cool cross. congrats on the large cent. I sure would like to dig one.

Thanks for the info fmerg. Tried to narrow it down myself but I'm no expert. Just Very Pleased :-) And thanks to all for the comments!!!

Congrats on that first big copper. :icon_thumright:

Thank you Michiganne. My goal was to find a pre 1901 coin.... and WOW did I! I guess my "beat my oldest coin game" just got a lot more difficult!!! Lol.... not that finding any 1800's coin would not be awesome! Maybe one in better shape or some 1800's silver!

HH on the other side of the lake! Jim
