** UPDATED ** I Suppose Now I'll Have To Give It Back !!

well if you remember from a thread a few days ago I found a 1907 I.H. and couldn't wait to get my new 9x12 coil on my Ace 250 and head back to a school that had closed up when I was still in 1st grade ( 1970 ). today i finally got back over there and of course didn't really find anything huge but i did find a 10K ring with the initial "DOZ". Wouldn't you know there was a kid who lived right next door to the school with those very initials - BUMMER !! I suppose i will try to get a hold of him and see if his middle name starts with an "O". he must of lost it when he was rather young judging by the size - i could barely get it on my pinky !!!

i did find a 1942 wheatie there also - note the scratches were not done by me or my toothbrush !!

1942.webp

then i went to a couple other places and really just found junk and a bunch of pennies

well thanks for looking and have a Great Day ( or night! )

Very Cool !

Re: I Suppose Now I'll Have To Give It Back !!

It might not be his! ;D

Re: I Suppose Now I'll Have To Give It Back !!

Yeah it will be cool if it is his. Great find!!!

Don't be bummed that you might know of the owner. Rather look at it as an opportunity to return something that might be worth far far more to the owner, than the scrap value of the gold is to you. Take several pics of it, return the ring, and relish in sharing the story of your find with fellow hunters and others who are interested in what we MDers find.
And, as a bonus, maybe the owner can turn you onto a site that produces far more "treasure".

It's a very neat find. Good luck in your future hunts.
Regards,
Jules

i have a feeling that the look on that guys face will mean a lot more to you than the ring does. you just dont know it yet! ;)

Returning the ring might help to improve the reputation we treasure hunters (particularly metal detectorists) have, it will make him one happy man, it will make you feel very good, and it could lead to more and/or better places to hunt. But more than all these things combined - it's the right thing to do whenever possible and practical. Congratulations on finding it, and best of luck to you in returning it. It really will feel good to do so!!

Re: I Suppose Now I'll Have To Give It Back !!

Remember it's the thrill of the hunt that got you there.
You will find more rings and other blings.
Anyways... Nice finds!

Re: I Suppose Now I'll Have To Give It Back !!

I know that kid... his middle initial is "I" ... "D.I.Z." He will say; "DIZ was never my ring. you keep it." ;D

LOL, nah, his initials are D.U.Z. - as in, "DUZ every metal detectorist have the same great ethical code as ivy walls?"

That ring is a great find, but it could lead to more and better! ;)

Cool ring.

Re: I Suppose Now I'll Have To Give It Back !!

Great finds. I know the feeling of giving gold back, but I've found it's even more satisfying (in most cases ) seeing the persons reaction when you give it back to them. Of course now, if it was a gold bar...... what gold bar, I didn't see any gold bar, did you see a gold bar ?

Re: I Suppose Now I'll Have To Give It Back !!

Keep us posted!

Re: I Suppose Now I'll Have To Give It Back !!

Great find & story Mark. I can hardly wait to here the outcome. Hopefully you can find the "DOZ-man".
Maybe it stands for Dept Of Zoology? ;D
Good luck,
MM
