I found an older looking ring today. I know silver is usually marked sterling or 925 but this one says silver on the inside. Does anyone know if that is an indication of age?
Thanks

You can barely make the word silver in the pic, you can see it better with a loupe.

I filled in the word silver.

Re: silver ring markings

I wouldn't think so. I know that "sterling" has been used for hundreds of years so....

Re: silver ring markings

Never seen or heard of the silver mark of 'silver'.... doesn't seem right to me if that is what it says...

I found a small childs ring almost identical to that and it was silver but it had 965 inside it. Gave it to my Grandaughter for her birthday. Monty

Maybe more wording than just 'silver'? Anything else stitchlips?

I can't be sure from the new photos you added that it is Silver but if it is it looks very debased. Plus the stone would lead me to believe costume jewelry.

What I can tell is the 'Silver' incised mark is handmade & could not be an official hallmark. Adds weight to it not being silver but doesn't discount it completely.

Silver Testing Kits are very cheap now, only $10 or so.

Hello Everybody...I love silver! ;D,so skimming through posts i saw this and decided to add my 2 cent's worth.A few times when scrapping silver i had peices marked only silver&in ALL cases it was questioned until tested, mine were 925 parts silver. So i figured i'd add these photos.BUT as mentioned in other replys it's best to test it or get it tested, only way to prove it ! Thank's for listening all&HH !!!

Very interesting, learnt something new. (never had any China pieces etc)

Still find it odd how poorly incised it is, would it not be stamped silver. Were your 'Silver' marked pieces as poorly written?

It's not stamped poorly, my coloring of the stamp is what is poor. The stamp is precise and it tests silver with an acid test.

A couple peices were poorly done,i almost tossed them because of that reason...CRUSADER you have helped me w/posts in the past,i remember your info.was ALWAY'S valued ,as in the pictures it states that "silver" varies in content(fineness),the ring in this post does look like nickle silver as mentioned but most likely 800 or less parts silver...HH ALL!!! :read2:, :icon_thumright:

Im going to save your silver fineness table tokenhead. thanks. :icon_thumright:

As far as testing silver or silver fineness, it can be done with a home made solution of Nitric Acid and Potassium Dichromate. If anyones interested Ill search for it.
