US Belt Plate, Silver Thimble, Coins & Relics

Had some time this weekend to check out a new section of park woods I’ve been researching. Site shows up in 1860 map through 1930’s aerial photos.

Was really shocked when the plate popped, it’s a bit crumbly and far from perfect, no Civil War battles In this part of PA. Definitely a bucket lister I never thought I would find at home.

A number of other interesting targets were found.

The Silver thimble has an interesting pattern and marking inside.

The “Coal Eng No…” piece is a bit of a mystery as is the penny size piece with center hole, looks like some kind of worn pattern on this.

The brass piece in the upper right of the photo of large brass targets looks familiar. The lion escutcheon plate was one of the first targets, definitely knew it wasn’t a hunted out site.

You certainly made the most of your free weekend. Congrats on the puppy paw US belt plate. I see you also got an eagle infantry button. Was it from the same spot as the belt plate?

Thx Steve! Yes, the Eagle I button was about 15’ away from the belt plate. Probably an infantryman from an Allegheny county Union regiment lived here 100+ years ago.

You scouted a great site, good detective work on that. Keep in mind there is no need for a battle site to get nice finds. They did plenty of marching and camping in between battles. Why so many buttons fell off is a mystery to me. We didn't have that problem in last 80 years.
