OK, so ive been lurking here for a while now, I love to see all the amazing stuff people are finding! So, i put my cheapy chinese detector i bought on ebay once upon a time for real cheap (you get what you pay for) to the test! Well, aside from it being a total piece of @#!$ i did manage to get a couple of things out of the ground! Ive got a few coins (most are new, the oldest being a 1969 nickel) but nothing special. Got a hose attachment, some sort of metal fitting and four cars. About the coolest thing i have to show is one car, its the bizarro looking red one on the far right. I did a little research on it, turns out its a Midgetoy dating back to the late 40's. Oh, and i think i got all the rocks out of the yard too... I took it to the beach on saturday, only to find lots of rocks. Not even trash. My 15 month old son found more metal then I did! Needless to say, im thinking of going to an Ace250 unless someone can point me to another detector. Im looking for something more in that price range. Theres a detector shop some 40 mins away, thinking of stopping by tomorrow after work. Im sure they can give me some pointers on how not to pull every single rock out of the ground. Ive been out every night in my yard and so far ive gotten something every time!

I think a move to the Ace 250 would be a good move. Are you sure the directions to the Chinese detector were translated correctly? Jay Leno shows some pretty good examples of products from China that get the translation messed up pretty bad. Reason I say that is that you may have not found the knob to turn that sets the "Rock Discrimination." It may be mislabeled as "Iron Check" or something else. All kidding aside, the beach is tough even on the high-end detectors. Too much mineralization - salt and black sand. I went to a PI machine just for the beach. On land, your detector found more than I do sometimes. Especially good find was the nickel. Those are not the easiest signals to get right. I would say you did good with your "piece of crap" being able to hand disinter some crape as well as some other pretty good stuff.

Hi kim_in_socal
Wellcome to Tnet, You've done OK for a cheapy as you say you get what you pay
for and things can only get better, buy the Ace 250 and you'll see.
As a lot of users will tell you.

good luck and HH

Dave.

Thanks for the welcome!!

BioProfessor-The directions came in as a trifold piece of paper! You know you've got a cheap product when the company that makes
them can't afford to spellcheck! (or publish an actual manual!) The 'engrish' was pretty bad in the booklet i got! Theres a discriminate and a sensitivity level, which I have played with it seems to work. Im not so much looking at what it is picking up, being new at this Im basically digging every target. i think everything that has come up came under a trash reading. Im getting good at digging a good hole and not having little sinkholes hehe. I am having fun doing it, and i know it will be a lot more fun with a good machine!

But you never found the "Rock Discriminator" setting. ;D

At least you are learning to dig. Firm up those muscles. Learn how to cut a flap with three stabs. Practice is practice.

Don't "give" the detector away. Your little one will want to be like mommy soon enough and that one is about their speed. They enjoy the sounds as well.

Kim,
Moving up to an Ace would be a move you wouldn't regret.
You're going to find junque but that's part of the hobby.
My kids love it even when they dig nothing but that not-so-desirable stuff so I agree with BioProfessor, hang on to that other detector.
You have a great attitude and as long as you keep that sense of fun and a sense of humor..you'll enjoy it for a long time to come!
:)
BTW..Welcome to Tnet! ;D

Kim, like diggit said, keep this one and get an ACE from Garrett. I'm sold on mine, it gets better every time I'm out diggin'.
Keep Safe.....

I could dig up these toy cars all day long, makes you wonder about the person who lost them! OK OK, you've sold me on the ACE! Im hoping tomorrow to have a short work day, so i can head up to the store i found online thats not too far.Ive got a few bucks burning a hole in my pocket. I think i will hold onto the other machine, that way when my son is old enough he can find his own treasures! (well, he is only 15 months right now..so ive got a while!) Definately a good idea!Daddy's into cars, and the little one is even further away from being able to drive yet! ;)
Im still looking for that 'rock discriminator' hehehhe!
Aside from a good detector, are there any other tools of the trade that i should think about?

Kim - Welcome to TNet. Good finds for a "cheapo". You'll love the Ace 250. For the money, you can't beat the features. I have a Discovery 1100 as well. It's a step or 2 below the 250, but they are night and day. The pinpointing function is a time saver, and a ground saver. Look forward to seeing your posts in the future.

NIce finds Kim. You might want to think about a pinpointer later on...they cost about $100 bucks so you might want to wait on that. Read some of the posts pertaining to pinpointers; I love mine, it comes in real handy. If you are going to beach hunt you will need a scoop. There are several kinds ranging from $30 and they go on up to around $150. I drilled holes in a plastic scoop I bought for $5.48 at Tractor Supply. Have fun most of all. I don't have an Ace 250 but I've read lots of posts of people that have one and they all love it and find lots of stuff.

Hi Kim, welcome to TNet.

Nice finds for an "economy" model detector. ;D

Good luck hunting, looking forward to reading your posts.

Kim...cars are always cool. Keep up the good work!!

Decent finds there Kim. Just wanted to let you know the thing you found with the "H" on it it a side to a Hubley brand truck from the 50's. I have several trucks in my collection with the the same side panels. HH

Welcome to the most addicting FUN hobby you can have.

You already have a good start, even with a "inexpensive" detector. Good finds, so far!!!
You should get the Ace 250 and practice with it. You will be finding loads of old goodies with it before long.
