Using a GPS hand held device and cell phone navi

Have any of you guys used a hand held GPS device or cellphone navi when metal detecting?
some of the hand held gps device have a MMC card where you can load a certain map into the card
such as the locations of old ghost towns and dry washes and old fishing and camping sites.
and in town most cell phones has navi app where you put in the names of city parks and tells you
how to get there and where it located at.
I think it's cool idea to use a hand held gps device and cellphone navi when metal detecting.
and you won't get lost also.
like to hear your replies.

bobbie and i use a tom tom we use it if we are heading to a new area, will use it to mark route to detect. it works real fast , we have been more than pleased and it has allowed us to spend more time detecting and less time gettting lost something i am an expert at

Some times you the make a trral to see what the where you detected finds.
most of the gps information can down loaded on a gps software and keep as records and logs.

When looking for logging camps, I use a gps unit and log certain finds. When I get home I plot the finds on a map to look for patterns that I might have missed while walking. It has helped me.

It be nice that you load your own map on a mmc sd card of ghosttowns and any point of interest of spiecal waypoints..

I use two GPS units. The first one is an ancient unit. It was the first color unit out. It is actually about 10 years old. It sits on the dash of my MH. I use it only to tell me where I am on cross country trips. I usually set it on a 3 mi. scan. The second unit is a hand held unit. Its main use is the "bread crumb" trail it leaves as I hunt that enables me to return to my vehicle. Have you ever noticed that everything start to look the same as you start to walk thru the canyons out west, or the mountains in the east? I just use the maps that came with them. The less I fool with them the better off I am.

I always like the details gps maps, I my Vz navi on my cell phone to tell me where city parks are and how to get there.
my main gps hand held device I use located possiable areas old towns....

I use a Delorme pn 40 that came out within the last year. I upload the aerial photos on to the map and then i grid the areas I detect. I usually get rid of alot of trash that way. I can set it up to only cover one specific square. It has a desktop mapsource that you can update and use. You wouldn't think it would be that useful but if you pinpoint each find it really gives you a since of where everything was going on. And then you can concentrate around that particular area. It is especially good in the woods so you don't get off track and cover every inch.

mine was blank. I have an extensive map collection on two mem cards. The delorme gives you some free. It is definitely enough to learn how to find and download.. Real simple process. We are working on overlaying 1800's maps over newer roadmaps and getting them on the gps....

well it depends on which gps you use. Delorme of course uses Delorme maps. Garmin uses (i think)their own. magelan gps's uses natgeo maps. On mine a regular mem card like is used in a trail camera or a regular camera will work. what you do is they give you the hardware for their particular brand. and then they give you a coupon for several areas and you can pick which quad and what type(like aerial, topo, hybrid) and then purchase it and then download to the card or to the machine. It sounds confusing but I have had all three mentioned in this post and by far the delorme was the easiest to download. if you want to purchase one shoot me a pm and I'll let you know my personal experience on the ones I have and you can choose.

i think there is a 5 or 6 disc set by brunton that is compatable to your machine. I havent gotten on lowrances site but im sure it is. the sd cards that i have are only for adding storage as far as i know they dont offer sd's with maps already on them. I would think that would be too much info, but plenty of space for the places you personally use. I dont have that much experience with the explorer except with a friend of mine.
