using headphones

Quite simply....yes you are, the faint deep signals.

Nevermind killing your batteries twice as fast!

i metal detect out in the country and hardly ever wear headphones. am i missing anything by not using them? would like to hear some opinions. thanks.

Rex, what brand and model detector are you swinging. Headphones can make a difference, but not always. If it is early morning and there is no wind, I take off my headphones sometimes and let the speaker on my Tesoro Vaquero talk to me. It just depends on your situation, ambient noise levels - and your machine's speaker unit. With headphones on, you can hear the SLIGHTEST disturbance in a threshold, such as a "negative break," when the threshold suddenly goes quiet over a deep target. If you have a machine with no audible threshold then headphones are less useful - but, you may still hear a blip through the headphones you might not hear on the speaker. Get an inexpensive pair and see.

I only use them on the beach. Frank...

Headphones is a must! U must be missing so much man

Metal detecting is an audio game. Always has been. You need a good quality comfortable set of phones. Sunray pro golds are awesome at about 130 bucks.

i use a fisher f4 detector and have headphones. i'm just not comfortable wearing them, but if i am missing things i guess i better learn to like them.

60% or so. More if your detector is audio only. Faint signals are often the better items - deep coins or gold. I compromise and use a Detector-Pro Rattler one-earcup headphone. That way I can concentrate on audio while still being aware of my surroundings.

I use a pair of Black Widows when I am serious. They block out most ambient sounds and you can really disappear into another world when using them.

I can think of at least three reasons to wear earphones. 1. To save on batteries. The power amplifier driving your speaker takes up the most of your batteries. By using earphones, you by-pass the pa, saving on batteries. 2. Ambient noise levels are geatly reduced giving you better chances of hearing that faint whisper. 3. The noise from a speaker attracts kids like dead meat attracts flies. And kids can run faster than I! When they see that ring pop out of the hole WHOOSH, it's a foot race! TTC

use my headphones all the time

How are the garrett headphones that come with the AT series directly from garrett?

Don't know where in the country you're hiking, but i wouldn't recommend wearing headphones of anykind in bear or lion territory. These animals are stealthy enough without you making yourself DEAF in the bargain. At the very least, i'd suggest you sweep the area first for recent signs of predators, before you sweep with a metal detector. A compromise might be to use the earphone on (one side) of your head and keep the (other ear) uncovered. Situational awareness = survival.

No one gets it all! It's what you find that counts. Here's some brief glimpses, but I will leave out the caches.ruby gold ring 700.webpgold cross chain.webpcoins_0004 1854 F_edited-1.webpcoins_0002 H 5 peso.webpcoins_0010 2euro harp_edited-1.webpcoins_0012 1euro eagle_edited-1.webpcoins_0013 token sq_edited-1.webpcoins_0007 H Sears.webpI can see you have not read many of my posts. i always use earphones, for battery longevity and the faint whisper
if a bear or lion wants me ,so be it.i want my treasure,lol
i do keep an eye peeled for trespassers in my surroundings.
however they do get uncomfortable after many hours on the ears.

I never said you weren't finding anything I just said there is no tellin How much better stuff your missing

I have too many holes to fool with the head phone cord. After a scare with a rattlesnake last year, I am not comfortable wearing head phones. This snake was a foot away before it moved. Chaps wouldn't have helped as I was bent over digging a hole.........but head phones would help on any dig you can go deep. Have a 3" rule here in the city parks.........told by other detectorist not to get caught. That faint wisp, a lil zip is a good sound. You will know it after you dug a few. Good luck either way you go.

You have to get realistic! You mean if I put on head phones that $3000 ruby/gold ring would be a diamond/platinum ring? I really don't think headphones would have improved my finds in that yard. Your statement implies it would. That ring is my backing, where's yours? Frank...

I never wear headphones.I live and hunt at 7000 ft elev in the forest.Have had mt lion sightings also bears and snakes.I know I leave behind some deep targets but consider this;
I have found that 80% of my finds are 5" or less.I figure its a numbers game,square footage covered per hour.I dig a ton of holes and am not slowed by the headphone wires,or reworking faint signals.(not to mention chasing ghost signals).At the end of the day,week,year I am finding that I consistantly out hunt my two hunting buddies.They wear headphones.They are always saying how lucky I am.
I cant and wont wear em,not convinced my finds count has suffered,I cover alot of ground per hour and most importantly.....I have a blast safely.
my two cents.
