Vacant lots Fair Game??

Well I’m not the expert here but here’s what I did once. I found two abandoned homes.. old as the hills and run down. I looked up on my county GIS who owned it via address. One was in foreclosure so I skipped it. The other one was owned by the city for section 8!! Score!

So I hit it and found a merc and a bunch of wheats.

I have had success asking neighbors “hey do you know who owns this home” one guy said the Man he died 6 years ago and his sons live in Montana and I still mow his yard.

So he let me swing it!

I would knock the holes around it and ask around. Look up the address and research it.
Good luck!

somebody owns it, so you need permission.

Agree with Jason in Enid, always get permission! Then there's no problem when the police show-up...

If you're talking the type vacant lots with short-cut trails across them, then I would treat myself and my hobby as no different than the person who uses those short-cut trails.

There was some vacant lots in the blighted parts of my city, where buildings had been demolished 30 or 40 yrs. earlier. I looked them up on assessor's parcel maps, and found that they had an owner (not eminent domain, or whatever). The owner was listed as someone 70+ miles away. No doubt family descendants that let the property lie abandoned. Because the area is too blighted (skid row) to make any development economically feasible. So now: Shopping carts and litter the site. Homeless encampment tents go up. Short -cut trails criss-cross, etc...

This would be an example of where I would find no foul or harm. But ... to each his own. It all depends on the mental mindset of "vacant lot". Because the next person is going to envision that as "snooping around in someone's yard".

I have noticed a lot of vacant lots within the city limits of my town. There are no signs or barriers on the lots. Any opinions or experiences with detecting in places like these???
Vacant lots are still owned and digging on them with out permission is trespassing

being on private property without permission is trespass
digging on private property without permission is vandalism
Taking anything away from private property without permission is theft.

So detecting on land without permission can get you at least 3 charges from the cops.

You can always stop by City Hall n check to see if it's city-owned...and while you're there, it wouldn't necessarily hurt to ask whomever if there are any other city-owned properties you can hunt and where they are. 😉

All very helpful thank you everyone.

Depends on where the vacant lot is. If it’s in a neighborhood I personally wouldn’t if it’s anywhere else I’d just go early in the morning, but that’s just me. I evaluate my surroundings.

The lots are big probably 3-4 acres way bigger than a single home would have. Thanks for the help.

Trespassing is still illegal in the early morning hours and doing so gives our hobby a black eye.

Oh I agree. If it’s a vacant lot on one of these Old highways out here with no house or houses around it AND there are no signs... I’m just being honest....I’m on it.

NYS Law

Q. Must I post to keep people off my property?
A. No. Trespassing is illegal even on unposted property. Instead of posting, a landowner or other authorized person may issue written notice to another informing them that they are prohibited from a property. The notice must contain a description of the property, what restrictions apply (hunting, fishing, trapping) and the person or persons prohibited from entry. It should be delivered by certified mail or other processes to prove that the person was served. At any time, anyone asked to leave the premises, posted or not, by the landowner, occupant or other authorized person, must do so immediately.

Joe, I understand the intent of your post. And I commend you for that. The word "no" stands out quite clearly.

However, reading the rest of the extrapolation, just seems to further cement the "just go" attitude. The "no" is contingent on "written warning" or "asked" (ie.: a "scram"), etc.... Ok, so I'll be the devil's advocate: If you (gasp) stepped off the sidewalk in the middle of nowhere , and no one said "scram" or gave you a written notice .... ok ... then what ?

Agreed, it kinda goes to the point you can trespass until you received a certified written notice????

Plead stupidity if someone runs you off. Apologize and say your new.. 99% of the time they will just ask you to leave. Thank them and leave..

Trespassing is tresspassing, it gives our hobby a black eye and it is illegal.
