Valve?

Company was founded in 1888.

Believe 5340 is the model number. Is it a tractor part, a yard hydrant or other valve of sorts?

It looks like a piece of an old water valve. The kind they used to put near the curbs of residential areas. They would stick out of the ground about 4-6 inches. I always wondered what they were there for.

I think it's the cap to an old brass water strainer.

An early 1900's brass water strainer manufactured
by Clayton Mark & Co. part number 2-5340.
It too is now a part of the
Marktown Preservation Society collection.

Model number is a match (guess 2 indicates inches whereas this part is 1 1/4).

Looks like the end of a 1 1/4 inch shotgun shell with the primer missing to me.
