Very odd color for wheat? Any ideas why?

My hubby found this one the other night. I don't think pictures due it justice. Very brassy looking and shiny. Absolutely beautiful! Any ideas?

It is either original mint luster or it has been dipped - pretty sure it was NOT whizzed.

Whizzed means mechanically polished (usually with a buffing wheel). Usually, it makes a very mirror-like finish but knocks down the features of coin. The wheat ears on yours show their detail, so I doubt it is polished (aka whizzed) - although the tips of the wheat stalks seem to have mushy details.

Dipped means to chemically remove the "tarnish" (jewelry cleaner, tarnx, brasso, vinegar, etc). Depending on the dip, this usually does not impact the details much but you might see pitting if a harsh dip is used. For a coin with all of its detail, it can be hard to tell if it has been dipped. Sometimes there will seem to be a slickness to it. Other times, it will be a bright color (red brass for cents, white for silver), but will not have the "shine" to go along with the color.

MS RED Wheats are common in rolls--- just saved over the decades from when they were new. rinse with soap & water for a few seconds will take the greasy film off & leave the original mint luster. sold in lots they can yield 20X face or more depending on year & MM

Don't use soap and water. This will cause spotting. Best is a quick dip in acetone (not nail polish remover) and distilled water.

I know you meant "D", not "S"; as there were no "S" mintmarks between '56 - '64......and no mintmarks at all between '65 - '67.

When nobody touches the coin for 60 years, that's what it looks like, uncirculated. Good find.

My eyes aren't what they used to be. But upon reflection, I don't think anybody would dip a 1958-S if they found one...
