says " Gertie" on one side and may 29th "89" on the other side... Does that name or date mean anything to anybody?

No, the name doesn't ring any bells or ID's that I can think of. But just wanted to say that the scrimshaw type name engraving on their looks very old ! Thimbles can date back VERY old. And they're a cool nostalgic item to have in shadow-box history finds-displays, as they conjur up an image of early americana, where people used to have to fix and re-fix, sew- & re-sew their clothes over and over again to get maximum usage.

Try doing some history research on the house you were hunting at. There may have been a daughter or mother named Gertrude who lived there.
