I had another job on today & Cru'dad went solo again. He wisely spoke with a land-owner that we thought had sold their land for housing but it hasn't quite gone throw yet, so we have a short window before this field is sold. It's one we have done pretty well on & have helped the Archies when they did their dig. In fact their trenches help bring up some nice Sceat's for us.:thumbsup:
Only the other day we wondered when & want our next great find will be & we didn't need to wait long;

Aethelstan I AD825-40 Penny - 4th Recorded Example of its type (Probably need to change title to EXTREMELY RARE!)- Even bent this is probably about £1000 coin.:hello2:

Other finds include;

Ed I Hammered Penny
Cauldron Foot
Nice Crotal Bell (18th-19th C)
Clothes Fastener (Not sure we have this type, maybe 1, but not as nice)8-)
1 Postumus Roman Coin

So big congrats to Cru'dad for a King we never thought would be in the collection!:headbang:

Hi, wow, those are great finds. Congrats:occasion14:

Good work by Cru'dad to rescue that cool and rare artifact from the developers.

Honestly most of Cru'dads solo hunts are normally a couple of buttons & not much else. As our options are so limited right now I assumed he was going to bomb. If we were out together today, its unlikely I would have picked this option, so that's why I don't influence his decisions, when I'm not their.:thumbsup:

unbelievable find! very happy for you two, congrats. The history that you two and the others in the UK are able to find is staggering to people like me. To say very awesome is actually selling it all very short but I'll say it anyways, very awesome!

That's a great coin with loads of history of your country behind it. I bet it will get a special place in the collection. Stunning!

I'm expecting only a small amount of recorded examples of this King & even less of this moneyer & King combo.:thumbsup:

Congrats on that rare 1 penny

Wow! The variety of coins you guys find is mind blowing. Crazy how they come out after 1000 years, better than our 150 yr old coppers. The crotal bell has a great design. Congrats

Outstanding Cru ! (and Crudad ) hoisting an adult beverage to you as i type this - Cheers !

Sweet digs!

Nicely done, and all the best,

Lanny

The Crotal Bell was a fairly early find & the type of day he was expecting, he thought he had the winner...lol

This KW or WK is an unknown 18th-19th C maker.

Your dad did well with that one Cru :icon_thumleft:. It's a pity about the bend, looks too bad to straighten, still a nice find though.

I won't go down the straighten route, as I'm not planning on selling it. I'm also pretty pleased that when we tell the land-owner the likely value they are not one that demands money.

Amazing penny! I read up on the history of Aethelstan I and it was a real treat. Thanks for sharing that history coin and major congrats to Cru’dad!!

@Scrappy;

Really? I can't find anything, are you sure its not the later more famous one? If not, can you link the site?

What a great day Cru-Dad had out in the fields, a smashing hunt. :occasion14:
Congrats on the awesome silver a beautiful strike even though it has the slight fold, amazing it didn't break as the early silvers seem so brittle. Liking the Clothing Fastener as well as the bell both great examples.

I think this King has very little written about him.
He won back the independence of East Anglia from Mercia in battle in 825. So he was the first Southern Saxon King to start reproducing his own coinage. This Kingdom was VERY short lived as it was grabbed by the Vikings in 869;
East Anglia

PS. A little more info;

Athelstan kills Ludecan of Mercia in battle after yet another attempt by the once great Midland kings to restore that greatness. With this act, Athelstan secures the independence of the East Angles and establishes himself as king. Although he still acknowledges Ecgberht of Wessex as his overlord, his is the only one of the smaller English kingdoms not to be absorbed directly within Wessex.
