VERY RARE - AETHELSTAN I PENNY AD825-40

I had another job on today & Cru'dad went solo again. He wisely spoke with a land-owner that we thought had sold their land for housing but it hasn't quite gone throw yet, so we have a short window before this field is sold. It's one we have done pretty well on & have helped the Archies when they did their dig. In fact their trenches help bring up some nice Sceat's for us.
Only the other day we wondered when & want our next great find will be & we didn't need to wait long;

Aethelstan I AD825-40 Penny - 4th Recorded Example of its type (Probably need to change title to EXTREMELY RARE!)- Even bent this is probably about £1000 coin.

Other finds include;

Ed I Hammered Penny
Cauldron Foot
Nice Crotal Bell (18th-19th C)
Clothes Fastener (Not sure we have this type, maybe 1, but not as nice)
1 Postumus Roman Coin

So big congrats to Cru'dad for a King we never thought would be in the collection!

I have always loved the medieval coinage. To me they seem to be more of a rare find than roman coinage which is even older. Especially anything before 1200s. What is your experience on that Crusader?

Plus I have said it before but I like those crotal bells too. I'm still looking for my first.

Any hammered before 1200 is rare, but this period is even rarer than the earlier Saxon period (where we get the Sceats). I will update with the Museum take on it pretty soon.

''This is fourth recorded example of a type E40.2 in Rory Naismith's book The Coinage of Southern England 796-865, from the same obverse die as one these coins, in the British Museum. The second coin is only known from a 19th-century line engraving, an the third coin appeared at auction in 2008 without find provenance.
Naismith's type E40.2 is part of North 441. The Spink catalogue is highly compressed and rather inadequate in this period, but S. 950 would be the closest approximation.''

No worries. The coin was a good find in my eyes, not many Maundy coinage was lost. They were kind of treasured as a gift from the King or Queen.

to find something from such a short time period, especially in such a turbulent time is amazing. To be able to research it and gain more knowledge is like icing on the cake. I guess that over the years you have seen a lot of finds that become more common to you and to find something like this coin is very refreshing. To me, nearly everything that you two find would be banner over here.

Further update;

Cru'dad contacted the land-owner & we are showing the coin this Friday but they have waved their half of the share that we offered them.

It's now legally ours.
