Very scarce Samuel Tilden Presidential (smear) token! Led to the contested el...

Today I dug an phenomenal token, and certainly one of my favourite finds of the year! Not only is it full of history, it's listed as scarce (SJT 1876-7 in DeWitt/Sullivan).

The backstory is even better than the find....

The election of 1876 was one that led to a contested election between Hayes and Tilden. Not only was this election one of the most disputed in American history, it led to changes in the electoral college and the compromise of 1877.

What's better is this smear token talks about fraud and income tax cheating. Sound familiar? Not much changes in 140 years!

Here's a link to some history...

A great find for me is something I've never found before, and from which I learn something new. I hope you all find this token as awesome as me!! This guy got trashed on it!!! Back then they didn't have Twitter and TV to smear one another, they minted tokens.

Also found today is some modern silver, some Indians, and an 1823 large cent I zapped. Yep, ZAPPED!

Enjoy the history!!

Very interesting token with a unique history. Great find!

That is super! Awesome token! Congrats!

That's a killer token Scraps! And other nice coins too. Did you spend that Rosie on coffee?

Best of luck to you brother!

What an awesome find! Political tokens are something id love to find. Nothing yet. But man this one is nice! Congrats!

Great history and narrative in your post Scrappy, wish someone would mint a pair of those for our current presidential candidates...my office is rank and smells to heaven :laughing7: classic

Yep. Keep the quote - no changes needed

Aww shucks Tom, I'm glad you like it. And the roosie has yet to be spent;)

Dont you love this hobby?
I have always loved coins, but as time goes by, things are changing...
I get more exited for tokens, medals, and any exonumia that is found, be it detecting, or any other means...
Coppers, silvers, all coins we all know about, studied, it's engrained in some of us that we've seen it all, countless times.
But a token that we didn't know existed, with a crazy story? AWESOME!
There are so many oddball pieces out there that I have never seen, learning about them is just great.
Thanks for the find, and your research...very cool!

poor Sam---bet he had no sense of Yuma (Arizona) when that was made :---). I think about him as much as I think about Hildabeest>>>>>>NEVER. keep your chin up and coil down

Sweet token with some Great history with it, Congrats!!
You did pretty good with the old coppers and that "newer" silver too.

Wow, what a great and humorous find!

I find this VERY interesting! It brings to mind a question. Just why wouldn't something this rare and historically significant, have supports for a banner vote? :icon_scratch: Am I missing something about what a "banner" is, or does it *have* to be gold? ;)

I feel the same way Dave. That is, unless I find something like 4 $1 coins like someone I know.

I've found a whole lot of old coins and silvers, many being repeats, which does feel great. But tokens and unique finds like this are the best

Banner is as banner does.

As for the token, it's going on the same shelf as my actual banners and my almost banner finds. It's that great to me;)
